"I recall the famous story of King Vishvamitra, who through millennia of self-torture acquired such a feeling of power and self-confidence that he endeavored to build a new heaven -- the uncanny symbol of the most ancient and most recent experience of philosophers on earth: whoever has at some time built a new heaven has found the power to do so only in his own hell."
One of the great things about Nietzsche is that you can open any of his books, seemingly at random, drop your finger on the text, and you are guaranteed to find something fascinating. One could explicate this passage at great length, but what interests me most is its context here on the Suicide Girls site, where body mods such as piercings and tattoos are the norm.
I have my own ideas what Nietzsche meant about self-torture, but I'm curious how others see this reflection in light of the prevalence of what some might consider "self-torture" as it is practiced among many of the site's members. Are they, as Nietzsche says, passing through hell and finding the power to build their own heavens?

for me, i sum it up as pure vanity. i've had piercings because i like how they look and the same goes for my tattoos, though i put a great deal more thought into those. since they are permanent i think they should be a statement about me as a person and/or what is important to me. but that's just for me.
