There is no such thing as happiness. As romantic as the notion of pure, unadulterated bliss can be, it simply doesn't exist ex nihil. Instead, think of it as the culmination of three distinct, yet related mindsets. First, there must be truth. Truth can be synonymous with faith, belief, or even confidence. Either way, the human mind needs something for confirmation, regardless of our current mood or impulse. Second, there must be purpose. There is nothing more soul-crushing to a human psyche, than being forced to perform a task, again and again, which has no meaning or relation to the world which one lives. Purpose rewards us when we we're accomplished, and holds us accountable to ourselves when we fail. Finally, as we reflect on the truth that we know, and how our purpose has served our sense of truth, we feel a certain degree of satisfaction. If ecstasy and momentary joy is a quick-burning flash, then satisfaction is the log fire that, when maintained by truth and purpose, can burn for eternity. It has the power to nourish us, sustain us, and makes life bearable when we are lost and beaten down. If ever you find yourself with truth, purpose, and satisfaction, look up and take it in. For just as you realize the true beauty of your surroundings after climbing a tall mountain, so too will the elusive spirit of happiness appear as clear as day.
