Okay, so, worked the Summer Session at City College and that was nice(ish).

I finally received formal notification (from the Provost's office no less) that I will definitely be teaching physics next semester--which is good sent I've spent an inordinate amount of time this summer prepping for that class.

Got a new laptop on order--time to upgrade since having an old laptop and an old...

Busy, busy, busy... biggrin

Congrats on starting the novel, on getting a new laptop, and on finding out that you'll be teaching physics! Speaking of which, will you be teaching a particular branch of the subject, or will you just be doing a more generalized course?

I was kinda surprised that we started talking about Gala (even though it was only for a few minutes), but some very interesting ideas were thrown about. We'll see what comes of them.

...and yes, you should make a point of coming up for it one of these years. It's the Mother Of All Parties, haha.

I've also done a tiny bit of reading about this earthquake of yours. Glad to see that all is (mostly) well down there. I'd probably have started crapping my pants. wink
radiofrank:
...of course it was unintentional! After all, the fact that my laptop is a pretty good gaming machine is also quite a coincidence. wink

The Dark Knight is well worth the wait, to be sure. I really enjoyed it.

Over-due for an update? Probably.

I just finished spending the last few days working through the first three chapters of a quantum physics textbook in preparation for a talk I'm giving on Wednesday.

My head hurts.

Thank you, sir.

There is a chance that I'll get to teach an Intro Physics class next semester. I'm really hoping it happens. Don't get me wrong, teaching Intermediate Algebra is fun and it would definitely be valuable for me to teach it again but...physics! Hell yeah.

Plus, my advisor will be teaching the second section of the same physics class, which would be very cool since we're...

Oh yeah, did I mention this is the same school that thought it was ok to let me take 15/16cr hrs, gave little or wrong advise and everything they could to squeeze nearly $50k out of my financial aid?
radiofrank:
Thanks!

I especially liked your balloon conditions, haha. biggrin

(Hmm...haven't had one of these for a while....)

God spoke, saying: "Let there be silicon nightmares."

Jesus spoke, saying: "Forgive me, Father."

The Devil spoke, saying: "Screw that, J. Let there be sado-masochistic mind/soul-fucks the likes of which mortals have never seen!"

God smiled.
Jesus sighed.
The Devil laughed.

Anubis, heretofore silent, shook his head and left the room.

What's new with you these days?

I'm giving a quiz on Monday, an exam review on Wednesday and an exam on Friday. There's no new material presented this week, so no prep time except for writing the exam--which'll be loosely based off the review (that I've already written). Also, I've somehow finished this week's homework for Imaging far ahead of schedule.

So...downtime in the middle-ish of the semester. It's like Spring...

So, the teaching gig is good. We just wrapped up systems of equations and I think I was able to rescue most of the students who had fallen over-board during that chapter. Time will tell.

I've begun doing preliminary research into my eventual thesis topic. As such, I just finished reading a paper on solutions to a high-order non-linear Schrodinger equation--a particular version of the...

I can't say that I remember the name of that book off the top of my head, but I'm fairly certain that it's in a box in my basement. I will try to fish it out of there and pass the info along in the next day or two.
radiofrank:
...and to this date, I have NEVER heard of a better application for mathematics than that. biggrin

Uploaded my syllabus to the class bulletin board this morning. Whew. Spent the rest of the day working up lesson plans for next week's classes. Also wrote my first quiz--which isn't even given until next Monday, but still....

I'll probably spend tomorrow and Monday working up lesson plans for Week 2. First class is Wednesday, 11:00 AM. I'm not nervous yet, but that'll probably pass.... wink
radiofrank:
That's the thing, though - they didn't actually go up. For some reason that I can not fathom, those sets were not accepted. I'm just trying to make sure that they get seen so they will end up on the front page. I'm glad that you liked them, in any event.

How's the class coming along? Have you destroyed anyone yet? wink
radiofrank:
Aneurysms, eh?

Sadist. wink

Tonight was a double first degree down at the lodge. Since this is the first real degree work for this year's officer line, the various parts of the ritual were broken up among various members. The lecture, which is normally truncated, was given, in full, by an 85-year-old Past Master who recited all twenty-plus minutes of it flawlessly. It was awesome.

I have to be honest, I have no idea what you're talking about in this blog entry.

I think I'm resigned to the fact that I'm getting older and that is just how existence is... but come 40 I might be singing a different tune. smile
radiofrank:
Ah, I see. That does indeed sound very interesting, especially with respect to how the speaker performed. I'd be extremely nervous in a situation like that.

As for my back...I'm not really sure, but it may have to do with the large pieces of lumber I helped my father with earlier in the week. I'm feeling a little bit better, so I hope that it will continue to improve over the next few days.

I just wrote the bulk of my first syllabus ever. Kinda weird in a He-Man/Greyskull 'I Have The POWER!' sort of way.
radiofrank:
Good stuff. What course does your syllabus cover?

...and no, Gala won't be in Santa Barbara. You're just going to have to fly up here. biggrin
radiofrank:
...I should have known that you'd find a way to make it sound far more evil than it actually is. biggrin

I'm going to be away from the computer for the next three or four days--which will, of course, slow down the whirlwind of updates that is my over-abundant journal. wink

Still, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you. Be safe and enjoy the loot. biggrin
radiofrank:
I thought that you might like them. They are "flashbacks" from a BSG TV movie that aired earlier this month, and they are about a young Adama during the first Cylon war.

I hope that you had a good Christmas! biggrin
