radiofrank:
You make some interesting points, and that other series you've mentioned sounds pretty good. I am now officially confused as to what I should read first. biggrin
radiofrank:
Yeah, that should be enough time to arrange something. wink

Thanks for the further commentary on both series. Now I just have to get out to a bookstore...

I can't get enough of this video. Period.

radiofrank:
'Tis a nifty video, to be sure. I don't think I've heard that song before.

The answer shall be revealed soon, and I think that you are (slightly) familiar with it. Maybe.

Welp! Just wrapped up the first session of an approximately three-session Call of Cthulhu (d20) game. We had two experienced player cancellations leaving two old-schoolers and four n00bs--never a good thing in CoC. I'm not sure that everyone grasped the idea that the start of any CoC adventure is the most boring since that's when the characters split up and do the research. I tried...

Well, apparently we lost the video contest. Meh. Still, an actual working String Theorist that I met in the course of the contest pointed out that, despite the voting results, our video, while not the most accurate of the submissions, was the most professional looking. Considering the two-week production window we had, I'll take that as a major compliment!

Not much else going on. Now...

you gonna love it ! one of the funiest book ever! clever as hell! huhu!
radiofrank:
Haha, I guess you could say that to me and get away with it. wink

Well, no word on the string theory video yet.

The semester ended in blood, sweat and tears but I some how managed to pull straight A's again. That's actually a serious surprise since both Complex and Algebraic Geometry were kicking my ass. Huh.

This summer I'll be back to the pebbling research and preparing for next semester--specifically PDEs, which means pulling out the old vector...

I can't get enough of this song. As such, I'm probably going to Hell.

The string theory video made it to the finals--as in the top eight videos! That's pretty freakin' cool, even if we don't win (primarily because Brian Greene is the finals judge and that means Brian Greene is going to look at something with my name on it)!

radiofrank:
Never thought of it that way. biggrin

Congrats on the success with the video, good sir. My fingers are crossed on your behalf.
radiofrank:
You're not the boss of me! I'll go to bed when I want to. tongue

Needless to say, I've been busy.

The string theory video is in the can and sent off--it's not great but definitely not bad for a just-over-two-week rush job and collaboration between to disparate departments. When I can, I'll post a link.

Spring break came and went under the auspices of an algebraic geometry take-home midterm. Fun.

Although our latest scientific computing project was a monumental...

Thanks for the birthday cheer, good sir!

Glad to hear that the end result of the computing project was good, despite the whole "monumental bust" thing. I remember that sort of thing quite fondly, for the most part. wink
radiofrank:
Thanks! Glad that you like them.

Discover Magazine is holding a competition to see who can make the best two-minute video about string-theory. Big-wigs at CSUCI want a team of students to enter (and win). The team consists of about ten animation students and four math majors. The deadline is March 16th. I was asked to join the math team this afternoon in hopes of helping them have an award-winning script...

The genus, apparently, of a curve in Real two-space is built from the Complex geometry of a sphere (genus zero) to a torus (genus one) to a two-holed torus (genus two) to an n-holed torus (genus n). If you bisect any one of these shapes with a Real plane, you get the shape of a two dimensional curve mapped onto the plane by...
