The Christian Right are on the march in Canada in an attempt to stomp out gay marriage. It is their belief that homosexuality is unnatural because it says so in the Bible. A book which condones the offering up of one's daughters to the rape and sexual abuse of a multitude of men as being preferable to homosexual activity. Don't believe it? Read the story of Lot (who shortly after the episode where he did offer his daugters up, has sex with them himself - apparently at their insistance and trickery, because, also according to the bible, women are the root of all evil) This same book talks of Noah sleeping with his own son Ham, in a sexual way, talks of Cain and Abel possibley having homosexual relations. The book also condones the punishement of death for those who disrespect their parents.
I wonder how we are supposed to know what to take as allegory, and what to take as the "honest to god truth"
Did you know that marriage did not become the domain of the church until around the 1100's? And even then, the role of the clergy was not to perform this CIVIL ceremony, but instead to act as a witness to the betrothal and that it did not actually become the full doman of the church for many centuries after that? SO, how is allowing men and women, who happen to be attracted to their own sex actually redefining marriage? Hows is it against God's law when marriage did not originate as a religious ceremony but was incorporated later as a way to make money and to solidify the Church's hold on the public, and thus solidifying their hold on future generations?
How is it that government officials can feel justified in being against gay marriage on the basis of their religious beliefs, when they are not supposed to carry their religious convictions into their law making capabilities? How is it that they can scream that they are being discriminated against under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and yet deny that gays. lesbians, bisexuals, etc. are not alllowed to have these same rights as they are somehow deviants?
Right now, the Canadian government is voting, there is another attempt to fell the Liberal minority government because of their stance on allowing basic human rights and freedoms to same sex couples. MP's are holding the government ransom, saying that they will vote against them in a non-cofidence motion becasue of their stance. And this is supposed to be an enlightened democracy. The Conservative Party of Canada is attempting to ban same sex marraiges on the grounds that marriage, based on biblical texts is to be defined as between a man and a woman. Yet the bible is not where our laws come from, and if it is, someone better tell all the Buddhists and Hindus and Muslims and Zoroastrians (and so on and so on) that they have been living a lie, for their is only one truth, and that is the Judeo-CHristian truth.
It is amazing how one can turn a blind eye to history when one has relgious convictions. It is also amazing that one can turn a blind eye to their legal responsiblities as elected representatives of the people n order to stand behind their moral high ground.
I have no problem with them taking a moral high ground, they are welcome to doso without using any tax dollars to make thier point. They are welcome to rant and rave intheir churches about how the world has gone to hell in a handbasket, because men can marry men and women can marry women. I personally don;t give a fuck about that part, they are entitled to their beliefs, as misguided as they actually are. They are not entitled to push those beliefs on peiople outside of their ccongregations however. They are not entitled to demand that law be made to disallow human rights and freedoms because of their religious convictions and they sure as hell are not there to tell people who they can and cannot marry, based on their natural sexual orientations. They are there to maintain government of the country, not battle out their religious convictions on the taxpayers dollar. Gays, lesbians bisexual, transgender, etc are people, human beings and they have thier natural orientations. They pay their taxes the same as you and me, they are entitled to the same protections and rights as the rest of us. Politicians who would bargain with people's lives for their own convictions oguht to be prosecuted for their actions. They are the true face of evil, because they barter in people in the guise of faith.
