I spent a long weekend in Pittsburgh last week. My best friend graduated from the Art Institute (that lucky bitch) and we spent a few days celebrating the accomplishment. An excellent time, if I do say so myself. My friend lives atop a mountain.. I'm not sure which mountain, but at the bottom of it you can find the Southside. The Southside is pretty much the only thing I can ever find in Pittsburgh.. so lucky for me, that's where they keep the bars.
On Thursday night, we ate sushi and drank sake at Jakapanese restaurant Nakama. Absolutely delicious, slightly overpriced, extremely packed. We later ventured back to her home on the mountain to drink a bottle of champagne and be lazy for awhile before we went back down to Southside to Bar 11 for more celebratory fun. Bar 11 is like the most excellent concept for a bar I have ever seen.
The walls are covered in aluminum foil, the only lights are black.. and they give out toys! Toys! And candy and all sorts of fun things to play with.. but you would never suspect it from the outside. From the outside it looks like any other tiny, hole-in-the-wall joint.. but inside, inside it is magical. lol. I recommend a visit if you're ever in town.
The next few nights we spent at Dee's Cafe. I guess that's where the hipster kids go. I liked it though and I met a cute hipster boy so I can't complain. And on Saturday night, these random fellows took us to some secret after hours Polish club that you needed a special card to even get into. I really have no idea how we ended up there, but I do recall being kicked out sometime around 3am. What can I say? We know how to party. haha. Other highlights include desperately braving the holiday traffic for hours trying to find an Olive Garden (which I know is a sin.. but I don't care! I love their food and there is nothing you can say to change my mind!) and driving home in a snow storm...
God, I love Ohio.
And anyway.. because I'm a glutton for punishment (and I like to taunt Mother Nature) I should be in Chicago right now. I have two tickets to see Kill Hannah on Friday and Saturday night... I was supposed to leave this morning. My friend was kind enough to let me know that he would not be going at around 1:00pm this afternoon. It's funny how his phone has been mysteriously turned off for the last two days and I only managed to get ahold of him via AIM. Seriously? AIM? What a pal. Needless to say, considering I spent a shit ton of money on these tickets, I'm not exactly thrilled.
So if you live in Chicago, you should buy them tickets, eh? haha.
But my mom offered me a shopping spree in lieu of presents this year, so I'm not entirely upset with life. I never have the money to go shopping. I'm willing to brave the holiday crowds for the chance.
EDIT: Thank GOD for craigslist! I sold the tickets!
