For three years I have been hard at work on an epic poem. I usually say that the idea came to me one evening at a coffee shop when, while reading Beowulf, I realised that many of the old heroic myths were pretty similiar to the tales told by old men sitting around bars to this very day. I thought it would be an interesting...

what's with the crazy ass profile pic? heh. it's cute.

work= yay! kid= getting friendlier w/ her timeout spot lately. life= awesome.

you know as a teenager you can make out for hours and it never loses its fun, and then when you become an adult, you don't get that as much? i found someone who likes it as much as i do. fun stuff!

how's work and school and life feeling in your tundra?

i like this story.

It's interesting the ways in which this is similar to and different from the old epics. It's really only the Old English stuff that I know to any degree, but your story is really fascinating. It's got that old-fashioned narrative but that present-day interiority and emotion, and a little bit of a later medieval courtly love flourish.

If I may take a moment of your time; if you could please send your thoughts or prayers out to a family in my village here.

Tonight a Kindergarten student was playing on some thin ice out by the church in the town, and fell through. My ex-roomate performed CPR for 2 hours on the child before they were able to Medivac him out. There's...

Last night I had the pleasure of having a fellow teacher over at my house, trying to bum a few smokes off of me. He's a great guy, and a lot of fun to hang out with; something that I haven't had much of an oppertunity to do lately. Anyway, a few of the kids followed him up to my house, and I have to...

Hey, no worries. You can't be happy all the time, you know? And anyone who expects you to is unrealistic.

As times have been getting a bit difficult for me as of late, I find that I've been drawn back to my old savior; mythology. I've taken to reading a collection of Celtic myth which I bought last year, but never quiet got around to reading at the time. After that, who knows where my mind will wander; I purchased a book on Shamanism when...

wow, i love the mythology, thank you for writing that down...I have never really read much of it like i have wanted to..and a 50 page poem?...i would like to read that too. If you want t get out of where you are, you are the only one who can make that happen...your not stuck, no one is forcing you to stay, it's your life, and if your life needs something better then leave that place so you can be happy. kiss
amitiel:
Do you teach anything besides the standard mythology (i.e. Greek, Roman, Norse, and Celtic)? Chinese, Japanese, and Indian mythology are quite wonderful, and something students rarely get exposed to.

Incidentally, my stand-by when I get into "that place" is Kahlil Gibran.

I was going to update my blog last night, but wasn't feeling to good. Having looked back over so many of my last entries, I'm ashamed to see that I've been coming off as a bit of a whiny ass (although I'll exclude the ones about being nearly killed by a drunken student; even I'm not hard enough on myself to take fault this those!)....

We just met, but it doesn't mean that I can't say that I'm glad you had a nice trip.

And btw, it's okay to be whiny sometimes-- isn't that why we have blogs, so we can whine? wink

Well, another day and another sleepless night. Apparently last night was the only good night of sleep I'm being allowed this week; I came home after a long day and went to bed around 9 and crashed until 7 this morning. It was utterly divine. Tonight, on the other hand, despite being tired to the point that my legs are cramping up, there is no...

wow, it sounds like you were writing about me!!!....I am EXACTLY the same, I can sleep for hours, its just the getting to sleep thats the problem, i lay down, the mind clicks on, and purely random thoughts go by, everything and anything!!...just like you!...i have been using over the counter sleep stuff a bit, some nights it works, other nights it doesnt, i have been trying to relax when i go to bed, but it can be tough....when i get some extra money i am going to buy a cd alarm clock and get some of those nature sounds cd's and see if that helps at all........here's to sleep!!!

Its 1:36 according to the clock on my computer; I need to be up in roughly 5 and a half hours in order to get ready for school, and I don't think that I'm going to be fairing that well. I only got 5 hours of sleep last night as well, and today was a complete disaster. Insomnia once in a while is to be...

I tried to sleep last night but got a phone call at 1am from a friend who had to testify against her mother in court. So at least your lack of sleep wasn't for too bad a reason. But I know how much it sucks. Hey, at least you get to look at hot naked girls on here when you can't sleep. Hope things get better for ya. kiss

as much as you want to wail on these kids, remember too- alaska is #1 for alcoholism, and if these children are that bad, there have been problems at home for a long time. don't blame the kids. maybe sit them down and ask them what you can do to understand them better. call a meeting with the parents, with the principal. remind these children that even threatening harm is called intimidating a witness, and is a class B felony, punishable by 5 years in a federal prison.

and understand that they simply do not have the understanding of a loving and supportive family like you've had.

these children are quite likely fetal alcohol syndrome. and that is a heady issue, and causes so much horrid damage to the frontal lobes of the brain. which is our center for impulse control, consequence, and reward system.

reach out. do not push away. you may learn something in the process.

*written at about 1:15 in the morning*

I just had the worst nightmare, and am now a bit shaken and can't seem to get back to sleep. I thought that writing about it might help me calm down. Even so, I think that I might be puting a light on in my bedroom all night, just to be on the safe side.

I dreamt that...

You know the worst thing in the world sometimes, is one of those days when you wake up in a great mood, fully rested for the first time in a week, and then the world conspires to piss you off at every turn! Today was one of those days. I was tired last night and collapsed into bed a bit after 11:30 and slept the...
