This is something I have not done in a long time, 2 posts in back to back days. I went to bed last night and had post nasal drip from hell and it kept me up till about 4 and then up again at 6, when the phone rang at 930 I was not in the mood, but got up and called the guy back.
Did a little work and watched some tube while getting ready to go the the movies. Went to see Shooter which is based on the book by Stephen Hunter, Point of Impact. They did a very good job, especially when they were explaining the mechanics of long distance shooting, the drop of the round, the wind, the velocity, and on long shots the spin of the earth and coreolis force. As someone who did this as a job in the South East Asia War games where the United States finished second, I found it to be informative for the average person.
The premise is that someone is going to try to kill the President with a long range shot of over a mile. There are weapons out there right now that are quite capable of that, most of them are 44 caliber or larger as at that distance a smaller round would have no impact left.
There was a major technical mistake in the movie, since the bullet travels at 2500 to 2800 feet per second, the round takes about 2 seconds for the shot to get there, but the sound takes 7 seconds. In the movie you saw the guy get hit and almost instantly the shot was heard, not going to happen, sound does not travel that fast.
Also from experience you fire 2 or 3 shots and are on the move before the sound gets there as you do not need anyone finding out where the shots came from.
The rifle show in the movie was the right one for the shot. That model has a range of about a mile and a half, with accuracy on a perfect wind free day of 3 inches or less. The wanted a head shot in the movie, in reality long range shots like that are taken to the mass of the body, a lot easier target to hit.
I enjoyed the movie, I can see sequel written all over it as the character Bobby Lee Swagert is in several novels.
I seem to be much better tonight, maybe I can get to sleep early.
This is a new theater in the area called Rave, I guess they are from the midwest somewhere. The layout was nice, digital movies, but the lighting in the theater was weird and I did not see well getting to my seat and the bathrooms were awful. They had god awful red tile and by the urinals overhead were some recessed reddish flourescent lights, it hurt my eyes.
My friend said that she was a little woozy because the digital effect on especially one of the last scenes reminder her of IMAX. I had not thought about it until she said something, but when I got up to leave my balance was a little off as well.
