When I was a kid I was a big fan of Superman. He could do anything and everything, fly, shoot lasers from his eyes, turn stuff to ice with his breath, even make time go backwards in the first movie, and he had an awesomely cool costume. Superman was THE man.
As I got older I started to realise that the whole Superman thing doesnt work all that well. I mean yeah, he can fly, he can shoot lasers from his eyes and turn stuff to ice with his breath. But I mean, everything's easy for him. The whole world loves him because he saves people, he has all these powers he can use to sort shit out and the only thing that can kill him is extremely rare rock from a planet that blew up years ago yet all crime bosses ever seem able to get their hands on.
All in all, life is easy for Superman. He makes stuff hard for himself with his Clark Kent disguise, pretending to be some sort of bumbling nerd and generally taking the piss out of mankind when he's not busy getting all up in the bad guy's faces. He doesnt have to deal with all the teen angst stuff that Spiderman puts up with, let alone the media picking on that poor kid all the time. He isnt some lonely millionaire/part time goth with dead parents and a grudge against the world like Batman. And what about Daredevil? That poor bastard's super power is being blind.
And the costume. The costume is what inspired me to write this, as I recently saw a picture of the new Superman from the next movie.
yes.
Now this movie is being made by the same guy who made the last two X Men movies. Unquestionably cool films, in which their costumes were completely redesigned to make it all at least a little bit more believable and alot less....well, gay.
And then this happens.
I admit, Spiderman's costume is somewhat fruity, and you could spot a Batman costume at an "attitude free" night in any student's union (remember George Clooney's rubber Bat-nipples anyone?)but why cant we put Superman in a black costume, without the stupid S and the leather dominatrix boots and cape? Why not mask his face to make the Clark Kent disguise a bit more believable? Why not cast a grown man in the role as opposed to what looks like an effeminate 15 year old?
More Hellboy is what we need.
