how do sideburns and hookers get their names?

Sideburns are named after General Burnside of the civil war who had tremendous mutton chops.


And working girls in Washington DC became known as "Hooker's girls" when General Hooker was in town.

Those are the only interesting things I have learned about the Civil War this semester. Whee.
