Scene 67 - Chopper's Kitchen -- Interior, Bedtime.
RIVER, 4 1/2, is finishing her grape juice before bed. CK, 35, is spending the night on her father's couch, as all of his possessions have been sold, shipped or stored.
RIVER
Where are you going to sleep?
CK
I thought you could sleep outside and I'd sleep in your bed.
RIVER
Oh, I can't sleep outside. A cheetah might sneak in (to the tent). Or a snake, some of them are venomous.
Or a crocodile. That's a reason.
Or a skunk. That's a reason.
CK
Those are good reasons.
RIVER
Or some dangerous woodpeckers. With sharp, sharp, sharp beaks. (Places fingers close together) This sharp. As sharp as your fingernail.
. . . Or a hyena. There are a lot of dangerous animals out there-- you just don't know how many.
--------------------
RIVER
What are you typing?
CK
I'm typing what you just said.
RIVER
But I finished talking a long time ago.
CK
Yes, but I suck at typing.
--------------------
RIVER
I'm probably not going to grow into anything.
CK
What does that mean?
RIVER
(Slowly, with emphasis) I'm . . . probably . . . not . . . going . . . to . . . grow . . . into . . . anything.
CK
Yes, I heard you the first time. I know what you said, but I want . . . to . . . know . . . what . . . you . . . meant.
RIVER
(Giggles) Well, I mean that I know that I'm going to grow up, but I don't think I'm going to grow into anything.
CK
Ah, you mean that you're not going to grow up to be a firefighter or an astronaut?
RIVER
I don't think so.
CK
Not even an astronaut?
RIVER
I don't think so.
CK
What if you could get a job dressing up in pretty dresses?
RIVER
(shrugs)

I'm right with you on Channel Live. I seem to run into that feeling a lot. Too often, MCs wind up sounding better on a DJ or producer's album than they do on their own. The Herbalizer is a prime example of this, for me. Great in gues shots, but Something Wicked This Way Comes did't move me until the Wildflower spot. Now that's good litening. Guru's Jazzmatazz series is bursting with artists who sound 1000x better on his work than on their own.
The Madlib stuff looks fantastic. My Windows media player is in some sort of spat with the audio link, so I couldn't hear it, but it appears to be right up my alley.
The Verve Remixed is a decent collection that looks to be along the same lines, just working with a different catalog. You haven't lived until you've heard Tricky mix Billie Holiday.
Seriously.
Blue Note was right on the ball about a decade back. My dad was always pissed that Verve (he did distribution for Universal, and worked with Verve a lot) didn't pick up on what Blue Note was doing at the time. Blue Notes Rare Groove series was doing huge numbers for a while and turning lots of new heads. The music was ripe and the Blue Note folks were waiting for new producers while the great Verve catalog collected dust for so long.
