I understand why people hate marketing, personally I blame television's long standing blast of non stop commercials that often weren't target to their audience correctly at all.
On the internet though, things are very different. Yes, ads can be annoying, even more so online. They can also be great. I'll give an example.
Back oh, in 2012 or around then i decided I wanted more hard drive space. I knew 4tb hdds were out, so I figured 2tb drives were going down in price. Rather than toss in another 1tb into my case, I figured may as well just effectively toss in two at once.
I Googled 2tb drives, and they were around $130, up and down from there. A bit too much for what I was wanting to spend.
Anyway, a few days pass and I Google something unrelated. Meanwhile, right up top of the results an ad from Google showed that Newegg was selling 2tb hdds for $99, free shipping. I clicked the ad, and purchased the hdd.
This benefited me, Google, and Newegg all. So I don't have much of a problem with targeted advertising. I don't miss running away from the TV while it told me about a luxury car I have no care for buying, or whatever prescription drug is en vogue at the moment or whatever. That form of advertising needs to go away for good.
Sadly, I only had that hdd for around 3-4 months. My roommate pulled it out of the media center PC i had downstairs to fund his heroin habit. I took that PC upstairs to my room after that. He died of an overdose less than a year later.
Too bad Google didn't advertise me a replacement roommate. Hehehehe
