Nobody Wants You To Be Sad, Walter Mitty
This poem was written at a time when I was working very hard, writing. I was
in a state of exhaustion much of the time. And I was feeling very lonely and
very sad. There was nothing unusual about this. But after my meditation one
evening, a shaft of golden heavenly light came into my room ...
This evening:
I was sitting; knitting
Longjohns for my pet mouse, Walter Mitty
When all of a sudden there came such a clatter
I looked all around me to see what was the matter
Then down from Heaven
Came a shaft of light
And down from it glode
Seven little angels (5 ft. 2 with eyes of blue)
Holding seven large balloons
And down from Heaven also, came a carousel
With horses and dragons, giraffes and loons
And down came a banjo player
And a little tin drummer (5 ft. 2 with eyes of blue)
And the music began, and the angels started singing:
Nobody wants you to be sad, poor Chrissie
Open up your heart
And let the sun light-in
Nobody wants you to be sad, poor Chrissie
Life is a carousel
Innocent as a day in May
Playful as a puppy
Get out of your shell
Get off of the shelf
Open up your heart
And let the love light-in
Nobody wants you to be sad, Chrissie
All of your life, you've been so melancholy
It's time to be jolly
Life is a carnival ride
Innocent as a day in May
Playful as a puppy
Nobody wants you to be sad, poor Chrissie
Get out of your shell
Get off of the shelf
(Finish knitting the Longjohns for your mouse, Walter Mitty)
Then open up your heart
And let the sun light-in
Life is a love story with a happy ending
Open up your heart
Let somebody love you
Open up your heart
And let the love light-in
Then just as suddenly --
They went, with a glitter
Back up to Heaven
I guess so they wouldn't be late, for dinner
Seven little angels (5 ft. 2 with eyes of blue)
Holding seven large balloons
A carousel, with horses and dragons, giraffes and loons
A banjo player, and a little tin drummer
( 5ft. 2 with eyes of blue )
After they left, I was in such a state
I was feeling so lonely,
I was feeling so blue
That I stopped the knitting of the Longjohns for my mouse,
Walter Mitty -- temporarily --
Instead I called you on the phone
And I told you I love you
Open up your heart
And let the sun light-in
Nobody wants you to be sad, Everybody
Open up your heart,
Let somebody love you
Don't be so melancholy
It's time to be jolly
Nobody wants you to be sad, Everybody
Open up your heart and let the love light-in
