So on Thursday afternoon I hit the road for Urbana-Champaign to meet up with my brother and parents to help Nick move into his new apartment in Champaign. I got there 10 minutes after they did and helped unpack everything in the lovely hot day.
Nick's apartment is straight out of the 50s in a bad way. He's got 2 rooms and a small living room, tiny kitchen, and very 50s bathroom. The walls are cinderblock and it looks like a dorm room to a degree. Nick and I most definately have very different taste in apartments, I apparently won't live in a house unless it is at least 100 years old and have at least 10 foot ceilings etc.
Thursday we got Nick groceries and stuff like that after going out to eat etc etc. Nick's a tab bit of a minimalist b/c when we were at Meijer getting him stuff, he didn't even think to get things like paper towels, trash bags, and all sorts of simple stuff like that. Oh well it was very Nick.
On Friday all of us biked into campus at the University of Illinois to the astro dept. We met Nick's super nice departmental secretary (sooo jealous mine's an anal bitch). We then proceeded to bike around campus and check out everything while Nick got his student ID, user ID, keys, bank account etc. U of I's campus looks like a cleaner version of OSU ~ none of the buildings match and parking is impossible. Also the campus is huge! It is very bike friendly but man there are some things that are just very very far out. It was so hot, even though I put on sunscreen I most definately got some color *shit, my pastey pale appearance!*. After all of this running around we then took a break and then scoped out the downtown area of Champaign which is cute and very much like downtown lafayette but with more outside cafes and places to eat, however a lot of the places looked super expensive vs somewhat affordable in Lafayette.
Saturday, Nick began to really unpack and we left for Lafayette. I then introduced my parents to Jody over some lunch. Jody and the parental units hit it off very well but then again my boss is the same age as my mom and 2 years younger than my dad to they all kinda think a like. Liberal baby boomers who are aware of what goes on around them.
We then took a break and my parents wanted to walk around campus and take pictures of things they saw last year. Annoyingly the undergrads must be back b/c we ran into a lot of people with maps who looked like freshmen with their parents. Oi, there goes the town. I hate the return of the undergrads b/c then everything gets swarmed, they are everywhere acting stupid and well just annoying.
I took my parents out for Thai food which they have never had before. It was a success, however, it shows how sheltered my parents still are to a degree. We then walked around downtown and I took them to Chumley's for a drink. I got my mom some Frambroise so that she could have a beer she shouldn't hate. Bwha ha ha ha I won since fruit beers are their own weird catagory of alcoholic beverage.
I ran into Luke and a few other grad students there so I said hi and after my parents went to bed I met up with them at Bistro. After that, Jake and I started watching random movies of tv with Luke and then Luke went home. Jake and i then watched bride of chucky on the scary horror movie channel with really scary female hosts who need to be sedated or something. Crazy british chick or chick with fake british accent in a schoolgirl outfit was just scary. And the commerical with the singing digestive tract to make sure kids eat healthy was just really annoying.
I got home late and my parents woke up around 6:30 even though I didn't 'get up' till 7:30. They walked to the bakery down the street from me got some tasty pastries, and then loaded up the van and hit the road around 8AM. I then went back to bed till about 1PM. I'm still really tired though I think it is due to all of the crazy walking, bike riding and other random stuff they had me doing. Now, i'm just tired and sore taking a break from monotous work of diluting stock solutions by updating this while rocking out to some Genetic Selection.
