So I've been contemplating doing my first blog entry for awhile, but didn't know what to write about. Well, last night something happened that I need to get my feelings out about. I attended Blackheart Burlesque in Denver for the second time. Now before I go on, the show was incredible in every way. @Shay was such a great dancer and so bubbly, and she brought a wonderful energy to the show. Also, the Fight Club and Donnie Darko were perfect and wonderfully artistic. And of course the whole affair was beautiful and borderline enthralling, and the only bad thing I can say about it is that it ended to quickly. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about the audience... The first time I saw Blackheart, I was part of an audience who loved Suicide Girls and respected who they were and what they loved doing. They were very respectful and supportive in their interactions with the women. But last night... Wow. I am both embarrassed and ashamed of last night's audience. Firstly, I'd like to address the actions of the man to my left. He started by creepily fondling and playing with the hair of a couple girls in the audience around us. Then, once the show started, he began to yell phrases such as, "Daddy like", while doing things such as dry humping in the performers' direction. At several points, he yelled up to them his desire to take them home and have his way with them. Now I don't know how you, the reader, feels about this sort of behavior, but I found it absolutely horrendous. Yes, the women are beautiful and sexy, and the performance is designed to ellicit certain feelings from the audience. However, I feel a certain modicum of decency and respect should be upheld by those in attendance. If you are the kind of man who finds this behavior acceptable at one of these shows, then I'm now talking directly to you. These women do not belong to you. They are not your whores. They are not objects. They are women. They are people. Never mind the fact that they get nude on camera or like to dance on stage in as little as possible. That's their fucking prerogative as women. As human beings of equal standing. And also their prerogative is sharing that enjoyment with you, their audience. How awesome it is that that experience is theirs to share and yours to enjoy. However, that does not mean you get to stop looking at them as women and demean them to some sort of toy you can try to take home. And it definitely doesn't mean that you get to demand their quiet acceptance of whatever harrassment you decide to throw their way. You don't have any rights to these women. And that's exactly what you're saying when you say these things to these women. That you think you somehow get to do and say as you please because they're below you. Well next time you think that, understand that the performance is the extent of that which you may have from them. If a woman wishes you to have more, she will let you know. Don't assume anything differently. And if this attitude doesn't apply to you and you simply think these are acceptable forms of compliment, think again. You're probably smarter than that.
Secondly, there was another man who thought it alright to make a comment toward a woman about how he "wouldn't mind catching her in a dark alley." Dude, what the fuck. There's nothing to even be said about this one.... We all know why something of that sort should never be said.
Anyway, my rant is over. I just wanted to say that these women deserve our respect as people and talented, beautiful individuals, and nothing else will suffice.
Now on to a cheerier note! I absolutely loved @Katherine last night. I mean, who knew how much more incredible she was in person?! Her homage to American Psycho was brilliant and morbidly erotic, and that combined with her Portal bit were the highlights of my night. In case you missed it, I've a video of her awesome Portal routine. Sorry about the mediocre recording job, but I was a bit distracted. And was covered in cake.
Thanks for bearing through my rambling, and enjoy :)
