Even as I think about writing this, I get the feeling I should shut up about how I dislike work, but fuckit,it seems to be a running theme in blogs all over SG so Ill run with it. Actually, thats a lie. I quite like the work, but its more the conditions. In fact, i think im going to draw quite a bit of ire for saying that im irritated by being paid to stand around and do sod all (which is pretty much what happened today).
I had a stretch of about five or six hours where there was *nothing* going on. It got so bad I took most of the glasses off the shelf, polished them, put them back and mopped all the way through the bar and cellar twice and other miscellaneous make-work stuff that I dont have to do.
My logic goes something like this.
Im being paid to essentially be a tool of the company doing something to help them make money. If theres no custom, im being paid to do nothing (yay me, etc). Except that nothing is really.fucking.boring. Its much better I think to be busy than to be idle if only because that makes the time go by quicker. And also it means that the company makes more of a profit which makes them happy so managers dont ride my ass telling me to do this and that, which leads to an easier time of it for me.
The "highlights"of my day are basically two conversations, one with the mildly sociopathic barmaid i work with about what shes going to say to this guy shes been dating, and the other another guy just doing odd stuff around the hotel.
Angie basically wanted me to give her a getoutofjailfreecard to say something to her bloke, who, because he went to a wedding without her(only the one invitation, apparently), she cut off contact with him for a fortnight. *facepalm*. And then proceeded to get on a high horse about all the fucking that goes on in the hotel between the staff. I personally dont give a shit. Its not something I would want to get into since it leads to all sorts of complications that I can do without (you might notice a trend here of me wanting to make my life easier. This is the central tenet of my life, a good one to have I think) but if other people want to jump the bones of the guys they work with, fine. I understand it completely if youre locked into shifts with the same people day after day on fairly shit pay, you get very close and very frustrated very quickly. So why not fuck?
And the guy, well. Its hard to describe. Essentially it was like listening to a demagogue about not having any respect for women but I think its more a misanthropic view insufficiently explained that he doesnt trust people in general but women in particular, and to an extent I agree with him. Women (in this mans experience) are far more... twisty and hard to pin down than blokes. In general women are very much about not rocking the boat and making nice to everyone while secretly talking shit about them behind their back (Angie in fact being a prime example of this. Its like a sick poetry in motion to watch her transition from bitching *viciously* about someone to being their best mate as they walk through the bar door.), whereas guys are more likely to open in their dislike. Or so Ive found.
Im not saying I agree with all he said, which thank god ive not expanded on, but this guy believed in this stuff with a fucking revolutionary zeal.
So leading back to earlier, my workplace conditions: Dealing with rich, drunk horny retards while surrounded by misanthropic demagogues, sociopaths and workplace incest.

Yeah, I hate it when there's nothing to do, but you often find the people who actually give a shit about what they do, and take some pride in it, end up doing what you did: take the time to just make sure everything is in good working order. One of my job often has periods where there's nothing really happening for hours, which is a perfect time to check all the machinery, stock levels, Guardian crossword, etc.
As for all the workplace inbreeding....I would advise not getting involved also. The one time I ever did that, I got fired because the boss fancied the woman I got into bed with! Typical. Since then, I've kept out of that sort of thing. Also, in my most current job, almost all the people I work with are blokes who probably wouldn't take to kindly to me making a pass at them!! Though some of them are almost certainly worth the risk.
One possibility: just fuck the rich, drunk horny customers. Then write another book about that.
