I agree with your sentiment, the last election was a flashpoint with far higher numbers turning out than usual hence the Farce as the polling stations couldn't cope. Nick Clegg (who has gone from coming out of nowhere to being vilified by students throughout the land and those responsible for the polling stations) have essentially alienated a whole section of voters who for various reasons haven't voted before, seeing the sprawling shambles that parliament is in won't exactly endear new voters.
As regards SG I very rarely read any of the articles it's more of a social network for me having met several very good friends which I see frequently via SG.

Protests of a noticeable size are always reported disproportionately by the media, you can guarantee that even if there were 50,000 peaceful protesters you'll see a photo of a masked troublemaker in an anarchy symbol hoody wiedling a petrol bomb with a headline of ANARCHY AT PROTEST.
I think people in this country are far too apathetic and worn down by corporately owned parliament to really protest on a massive scale. Most people are quick to argue about whatever being wrong from the safety of their armchair or an internet forum but not many actually do something about it so kudos for actually standing up.
I think Nick Clegg has clearly turned into David Cameron's lackey and his about turn on his previous pledge about tuition fees has put a big red bullseye on his forehead even if Cameron seems to be the public face of the "coalition".

The biggest difference is that the head of the government in the US is not just the leader of the majority party.
Elections are held every year. These are local and state elections. Every two years, the entire House of Representatives is up for election. Senators hold six year terms, so roughly one third are up every two years.
The Senate has far more power than Lords. If the Senate does not like a bill passed by the House, it will just ignore it. A bill cannot be sent to the President to sign if the House and Senate bills are not exactly the same.
You vote for a candidate, not a party, though this is changing. I could vote party line in Texas, but more people are starting to vote by party affiliation than the candidate. This is due to the hyper partisan nature of the President, and the remarkable party unity of the GOP.
