Have I mentioned before how much I hate driving?
I admit freely I am not a good driver. I also admit freely that when I am preoccupied with other concerns I have a tendency to turn my focus away from the actual act of navigation itself. This is why I ended up running into the back of a car this morning on my way to the gym. Fortunately, the two people in the car ahead of me were unhurt and apparently without insurance, because they made a point to inform me they wanted to leave well before the cops got there. My car already has some dings and dents and theirs had certainly seen better days. I couldn't see that any damage was done, either way.
So I dodged a bullet there.
But that wasn't the only incident. On the way back from the grocery store, which is usually where I go immediately after working out, I ended up backing into two elderly men. I got out to apologize to both of them and one of them told me, with a big grin, that he was fine.
So again I dodged a bullet.
I miss living in DC, where I never had to drive or take a car anywhere. I much prefer having a licensed professional shuttle me back and forth rather than doing it myself. It is also much cheaper to not have to worry about a car. Having a car involves upkeep and maintenance, monthly insurance payments, gas, and repair costs. It's often more trouble than it's worth. If you love driving, more power to you, but I don't. I never want to live anywhere else that requires me to have to drive. I realize I will probably end up in that situation again if E gets into a doctoral program not in DC or, after she gets her PhD, attains a job outside of a major metropolitan area, but maybe if that's the case then she can be the one who drives.
