Two weeks ago from yesterday we were walking hand in hand down Wisconsin Avenue towards the Tenleytown Metro stop. E noticed the beginnings of a security detail. Secret Servicemen dressed in black suits and sunglasses plus other armed guards were flanking a convoy of identical black SUVs. More perceptive than me, she knew that, due to the size of the gathering and the degree of protective services, whomever was about to pass us by would likely be a high-ranking government official.
As it turns out, that official turned out to be President Obama. We got a good glimpse of him as he was staring out of the window of the car, looking to his right. He had a look on his face of annoyance or fatigue or both. I was reminded of how he looked back in the summer of 2007, back when I shook his hand immediately following a campaign rally at the Convention Center in Atlanta. Let's just say that he wasn't in the best of spirits then, nor did he appear to be that day.
Being that it was five o'clock in the evening of what I'm sure was a very stressful week, I can understand him not being much in the mood to smile or feign enthusiasm. He probably wanted to be home with his wife and kids, not having to go to yet another function instead, wherever it was. Despite doing some research online, I never found out exactly where he was heading.
