Generational differences astound me. I never thought I'd observe it here, but the shift from those of us angsty, depressive, fatalistic Gen Xers have given way to the new optimism and innocent joy of the Gen Ys. When I was last on this site, four years ago, an attitude of extreme pessimism and morbid interest in self-destructive tendencies reigned supreme, and in my absence, I recognize a major shift in attitude and expectation.
I have to admit I find it enticing, but when I consult the date of birth of the younger models, I can't help but think that they're my little sister's age. I suppose when you get closer to thirty we all have these sorts of revelations. Age has been kind, though. I wouldn't dwell in my early twenties for a million dollars. I think one's twenties in general is the domain of a kind of selfish confusion and paranoia that eventually subsides when one gets more comfortable with both their successes and their flaws.
May we stay forever young, but not embrace the mistakes of youth in the process.
