My cactuses are blooming! (Cacti? Suculi?) I've got five HUGE Easter Cactuses that I've had for a few years. I had a good friend back in grad school from California and she gave me several cuttings from a cactus that had been in her family over a hundred years.
It's so cool to me to be a part of that sort of lineage. One Christmas a couple of years ago I gave all the people in my office a cutting from the biggest one. I wrote up a nice little story about my friend Heidi's Grandmom bringing this cactus from Nebraska to California in the 30's or 40's and how all of her Grandmom's daughters got a piece of it and made lots of other little cactuses and how Heidi and her mom still give cuttings of those same cactuses as gifts. Imagine all these cactuses all over the place that have the same DNA as this one scrawny little dry weed that somebody dug out of the dirt in western Nebraska in 1895......
Anyhoo, some people really liked the gift and others looked at me like WTF? Whatever. I like the idea of being part of that Johnny Appleseed cactus thing.......
