There is a very big difference between disagreeing with someone and bullying someone who says something you don't like. I'll give you a few examples.
Female characters aren't represented well in video games. They always wear skimpy clothing and are usually the victims.
Disagreeing: There are a lot of female characters in video games that are represented well. Yeah there's no female assassin in Assassin's Creed but that's an isolated case.
Bullying: Fuck you bitch! You don't know what you're talking about. All you feminazis are just trying to take over video games and ruin it for men.
It should be pretty obvious at this point what I'm talking about. Disagreeing with someone leads to a counter point that is very often representative of something that actually exists. By swapping points and counter points both sides can actually learn from one another whether or not they agree at the end of the discussion. This is actually a good thing. Sure we share ideas when we agree but we gain knowledge when we don't. Oftentimes one side or the other will bring something up that their counterpart doesn't know and they'll feel the need to look it up.
Bullying on the other hand teaches no one anything. It is designed to silence a person using threats, intimidation, insults and shame. Bullying is not only counter productive because we don't learn anything but harmful. Something we should have all learned from the many suicides that have occurred as a direct result of bullying.
I'm seeing a lot of videos from vloggers on Youtube who support #gamergate either ignoring the bullying that founded the movement or outright dismissing it as attention whoring. One vlogger even accused Anita Sarkeesian of using the negative attention to earn money from it going so far as to claim that bullying "made her rich so of course she's going to tell everyone about it." This is what bugs me more than anything. Not only is #gamergate founded on a lie and built by bullies but when they're called out on their horsehit they don't even have the balls to own up to their past or speak out against it. Instead they become the whiny little attention whores they claim feminists are.
I want to go on record as saying I don't really care if you disagree with feminists views on video games. If you do by all means speak your mind but DON'T BE A BULLY. And while you're at it call out bullies and refuse to support them. If you support #gamergate don't ignore the movement's past otherwise you are really supporting the bullies that continue to give you a bad name.
