In case you don't already know I love cosplay. I love viewing cosplay, wearing cosplay and making cosplay for myself and my family. Being able to pretend that you are a super hero or other fantasy character is quite exciting and can be a great boost to your self esteem. Knowing that the costume you are wearing was made by your own hands gives the cosplay that extra level of satisfaction and can make you feel even better.
But what is the limit? Are there practical limits to cosplay? What are they? What are the boundries? The Rules?
In my opinion both as a cosplayer and an enthusiast I daresay none.
Take a look around this site for instance. Throw a rock and you'll hit an SG that has worn a costume of one kind or another in one of their sets. Do a search on the web and you'll see cosplays of every style and level of quality that you can possibly imagine. You'll see people wearing cosplay and engaging in just about every activity known to human kind. Partying, acting, modeling, fucking you name it. After a simple internet search the question is just begging to be asked, is it acceptable to cosplay a character that is not your biological gender?
I mean seriously, if Wonder Woman can blow Superman and no one blinks an eye (well hardly anyone born with testicles at any rate) then why is it such a stretch for a male to wear Wonder Woman's costume? If you're already planning on acting like someone you are not then changing genders is simply a matter of taking that portrayal to the next level. That's why I would love to crossplay someday but something is stopping me.
Fear.
Growing up, men who dressed in women's clothing were portrayed as mentally deficient or even violent. Males around me who bragged about their manhood ad naseum bashed the idea of any male wearing women's clothing for any reason. It simply wasn't manly and anything that wasn't manly was to be put down, ridiculed and even threatened with violence. Its why I have only posted photos of myself in crossplay in my own home, far from the prying eyes and flying fists of men who think I'm a fag. However, as my crossplays near completion I am starting to realize that this fear must be overcome. Until it is those bullies will always maintain some level of control over me and I can not accept that. Thankfully I have discovered a number of communities online that have given me a wonderful amount of support. So much so that when I finally get these costumes done I am going to take a photoset and share it with all of you.
So I guess the point of this blog is to tell all of you that fear of society simply isn't healthy. We should not be afraid of those around us who do not approve of what we enjoy. They don't have to like it but they owe us enough respect to let us do it without threat of violence. This is my statement.
I'm sure Batman would give me a thumbs up. (even whilst fucking Catwoman doggy style)
