this past weekend the hollywood bowl played host to the annual playboy jazz festival. while the festival went on for both days, i only went on sunday. the picnic basket was in full e-f-f-e-c-t as vincent baked a sweet potato pie and made macaroni salad to go with my mean motherfucking fried chicken and hot buttered corn on the cob. i brought more than enough chicken so i was happy to share it with the ladies that were sitting around us.
isabella was sitting in front of us and was the first sample my buttermilk battered goodness. vincent thought that i must've been feeling pretty damn confident in my culinary skills to be giving fried chicken to a black woman. there's nothing like the benediction of licked fingers and all the time and effort put into frying that bird paid off when isabella said that my chicken is "off the chaaaaainnnnn!"
but the playboy jazz festival is about more than my fried chicken or vincent's bomb-ass sweet potato pie and isabella's cajun potato salad. it is about good times and great music and dancing. i missed the first act but showed up in time to catch roy ayers' 'everybody loves the sunshine'. the dakah hip-hop orchestra showed that they can lace some serious beats but the weakest link has been and continues to be the lackluster mc's they back.
dr. john, who's got as much blues as voodoo, was pimptastic in his bright orange suit and cream colored hat. by the time puerto rican salsa master gilberto santa rosa took the stage the crowd was primed to dance. i made the mistake of doing the bump with one of isabella's friends and the enthusiastic hip of a whole-lotta-lovely lady nearly sent me sprawling.
the most memorable performer was george benson, who's popularity peaked around the time i was 3 or 4 years old. you may not have heard of george but you definitely know his hits like 'on broadway,' 'greatest love of all,' and 'give me the night.' despite the extensive pop songbook, george is an amazing vocalist and guitarist. the licks from his gibson guitar were beyond comparison and when he sang and played the same notes simultaneously.. well.. i can't really put into words how good he sounded.
the weekend is behind me and the demands of work are calling. on the horizon is a press release for patrick swayze, some indie film stuff with penelope spheeris and stephen soderbergh, and an event in las vegas featuring a recently acquitted pedophile.
