today's daily variety ran an interesting piece about the bountiful hypocricy prevalent among our elected officials. the watchdog group citizens for responsibility and ethics issued a report last week detailing how some of the most vocal critics of porn on capital hill have received campaign contributions from companies that profit from smut. these corporate panderers are primarily cable and satellite tv companies like comcast and direcTV, companies that make millions of dollars each month from offering pay-per-view and video-on-demand porn.
representative chris cannon (r-ut), who hails from the same great state that employed a 'porn czar' at taxpayer expense, received and accepted some $24k in contributions from companies that profit from porn. not surprisingly, house majority leader tom delay (r-tx) also received the same amount as his colleague from utah.
the list of elected officials with their hands out is fairly extensive but none of the names is as surprising as senator sam brownback (r-ks). the good senator has accepted contributions from companies that profit from porn while going on the record for applauding the new attorney general's commitment to pursuing obscenity prosecution against content providers.
senator brownback also chairs the senate judiciary committee's subcommittee on the constitution, civil rights, and property rights. there is a hearing scheduled for this wednesday on obscenity and the constitution. like most congressional hearings, this is merely a dong and pony show where pre-selected individuals will testify as to how obscenity prosecution in america should proceed. attempts by the adult freedom foundation and the free speech coalition to participate in this hearing have been responded to with deafening silence.
your tax dollars hard at work.
