somewhere between the new shipment of porn i got this morning (insane ass sluts! jizz-hungry juniors.. i ain't making this shit up) and the lunchtime saag paneer-induced food coma that i'm still shaking off i forgot that i went to a concert on friday nite.
so me and lady g went to the house of blues on the traffic snarled sunset strip on friday nite to catch the legendary 215th. ya know, the philly-worldwide phenomenon, the motherfuckin roots crew. the regulars ?uestlove, black thought, and leonard hubbard were on hand and kamal was keepin it funked on the keys. but in place of scratch, cody chestnuTT and rahzel were two new cats that were sportin electric axes and mad game. i think that because the crew included two guitarists that the perf on friday nite (and ostensibly the entire tour) was more rock-influenced than i expected or had experienced in shows previous.
let's get something straight. the roots are the best live act in hip-hop. the judges ain't accepting any write-ins or absentee ballots, this contest has been judged a long fuckin time ago. when you take the best live act in hip-hop and throw in two top shelf guitarists the result is explosivo. we're talkin pure rocket sauce.
the guy on rhythm guitar, martin luther, was dairy fresh smooth as butter. in the game more for his pipes than his fingers, ML had the motherfuckers stayin cool, they knew the rules. if you don't know what i'm talkin about and are looking for a point of reference, look no further than marvin gaye.
on lead guitar was ste. juste aka lil miles. this cat looked A LOT like miles davis. and he played with the same economy of notes that miles employed. you think of a young axe man and figure that when he gets his chance to shine, he's gonna bring some randy rhodes type shit and wow heads with his speed. ste. juste did the exact opposite and killed em slowly. you know that when a cat with an axe can make a bunch of hoodied hip-hop heads howl at the moon, there's some legit ability on display.
there's only a few more dates left on the current tour. don't sleep, y'all.

I'll have to give you a jingle with a little 411 on a possible birthday event.
And always good to hear the Doc is back in town.
