Thought i'd do a wee blog on my favourite Documentaries. The majority of them have been suggested by my favourite, Louis Theroux. Most of these films are on Netflix or Youtube.
Blackfish
This one is about orca's held in captivity. It'll put you off Sea World for life. I didn't know any better at the time but i did see one of the shows in Florida when i was 16.
The Queen of Versailles
This one is awesome, it's about a family that aim to build the biggest, most expensive private house in America as the US economy declines.
Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father
A close friend of Andrew Bagby, who was allegedly murdered tells his story. He interviews friends and relatives in order to make a scrapbook of memories but what happens during his filming is unbelievable. I don't want to give too much away because this has the biggest twist in it.
Imposter
This one is about Nicholas Barclay, a Texas boy who disappeared at the age of 13 in 1994 and young Frenchman who claims to be him 3 years later.
Bully
This one is about bullying in American schools, it follows 5 students who get bullied on a daily basis. It shows the extent of what bullying can do to a person no matter how young they are. Sorry but this one will have you in tears. It's heartbreaking but such an eye opener.
Raw Deal: A Question of Consent
So, this one is quite disturbing. It's about it the alleged rape of a stripper at a fraternity party in Florida. The entire night was filmed.
The Elephant in the living room
This one is about keeping wild animals as pets in homes around the US. It shows how dangerous it is and how there are no laws in certain states from banning this. There's one incident in this film that is devastating.
Jonestown - the life and death of peoples temple
I could watch this over and over again. It's the most interesting documentary i've ever seen. I think everyone should see it. It's about Jim Jones and how he created this religious group called Peoples Temple. He led over 900 people who settled in Guyana and named it Jonestown. Jim Jones created a cult and it wasn't long before everything got past the point of no return.
He ordered everyone to commit a mass suicide with poisoned Flavour Aid. This film covers footage of the group and the survivors. Yes a heads up, there are some disturbing scenes in it. (you can watch this one on Youtube)
Madness in the Fast Lane
This film follows a young pair of Swedish twins who for no reason ran out on the M6 into on coming traffic. A BBC crew was at the scene by pure coincidence. This documentary shows you the incident itself and the aftermath and explanation as to why they did this.
Catfish
I think this one is quite well known but it's a favourite of mine. This one is about Nev who meets someone on Facebook and builds a romantic relationship. It was Fifthblade that told me about this and now i've built an obsession with it. There's also a Tv show they created after this film. The show is very MTV but the film is on a different level and i feel is more intimate. The ending is great.
Heavens Gate
This is very similar to Jonestown. This was a religious group led by Marshall Applewhite. In 1997 the police discovered that they had committed mass suicide in order to reach what they believed where their lives really started on an alien space craft.
Louis Theroux - The Most Hated Family in America
Anything by Louis Theroux is amazing. I've watched all of his documentaries and loved every single one of them. I really suggest you check him out. He's done utterly bizarre ones and really serious ones but the one that sticks with me the most is The Most Hated Family in America, known as The Westboro Baptist Church. Louis follows them and spends time with them and films them in their daily routine. They travel all over America to picket soldiers funerals. Louis done 2 documentaries on them and also mentions them in the book he wrote. I think they are quite well known now.
Grizzly Man
This follows the life and death of Timothy Treadwell. The film mainly contains footage that Treadwell took himself while spending most of his life out in the wild with grizzly bears.
The King of Kong
This one is about Steve Wiebe and his attempt to break the high score of Donkey Kong.
Anyway i should wrap it up there because i'll never stop. I spend a lot of my time watching documentaries. The ones i listed are the ones that stick with me the most.
