In Search of Nick Drake
LONDON, England (AP) -- Brad Pitt will narrate a British Broadcasting Corp. radio series about one of his musical idols, Nick Drake.
The BBC said Tuesday that the actor had recorded a two-part documentary about Drake, which will air on music station Radio 2 next month.
The plaintive singer-songwriter recorded three albums before his death from a drug overdose in 1974 at 26. Although he was a commercial failure during his lifetime, many bands have said he was a major influence, from R.E.M. to The Cure.
"I was introduced to Nick Drake's music about five years ago, and am a huge admirer of his records," Pitt said. "When Radio 2 approached me to get involved in this project, I was delighted to be asked and pleased that I was able to fit it into my schedule."
Pitt, due to start filming soon on "Ocean's Twelve," the sequel to "Ocean's Eleven," recorded his voiceover in Los Angeles last week, the BBC said.
"Lost Boy -- In Search of Nick Drake" is scheduled to air May 22.
*************
i was introduced to the album pink moon in 1974 by a friend who told me about drake's life and his suicide, then as if to drive the point home, took her own life a mere 6 months later.
i spent the next decade and a half trying to decode the connection.
no one else i met had ever heard of him.
(hey kids, this was way before the 'net.)
then i lost the record. years later, i found a place in miami that ordered it for me on cd from england. but i never listened to it; it sat, unopened.
molly found it, opened it and promptly fell in love with it, but pink moon held too many secrets and memories for me.
fast forward another 10 years or so--as a volkswagon (i think) commercial played in the background, i froze.
he was back. and so was debra.
and now it seemd everyone knew about pink moon and that nick drake was everywhere.
i was so angry that someone put nick's music was in a fucking commercial, for god's sake, so everyone would buy a goddamn car because of a song.
but somehow it liberated me and i was able to listen to everything drake.
in the end, bryter layter was the key that broke the pink moon code for me.
debra, whatever plain you inhabit, i get it now...and there must be some beautiful music there, as it seems elliot smith has followed nick's path.
thank you, sweetheart...i have five leaves left for you.

Wow. Thanks for opening up like that. I have to admit, I have never listened to any Nick Drake. I have a friend that always seems to catch the latest "trend" in music, but never really discerns between the good ones and the bad. He has insisted that I listen to some Drake. However, I hate dissapointment and I am stubborn to the point that when I am told, "oh, you have got to listen to this", I NEVER feel persuaded. On the other hand, yours is an inspiring story. I think I will seruptitiously listen to a cd, but never tell my friend and then if I like it, only admit it in about a year. That way I can claim that I don't remember him suggesting it.
