Chapter Two
Within moments of finding of her, the crowd began to move. This movement was neither away from the obelisk nor towards it, rather from the sides. It seemed as though they were making way for someone and then I saw them. Tall, blonde and statues bared an extreme discomfort for their god-like awe of him. She beautiful, elegant and innocent with eyes similar to that of saucers with a look of wonder. They stood at the crowd's center, nothing was said nor did anyone move, only glances upon this couple and they at them.
This silence was broken by the reluctant steps of a women coming forwardLogan saw her and smile, it reminded him of a nursery girl entering the world. He announced "is there something you wish to bring forth?" she took a big breath and spoke "with all that has gone on, I don't know if anyone has thought of the question as to shelter, if no one has well there is a thought that has ran though my mind". Logan looked at her with confidence "go ahead, tell us your thoughts" with that a smile came to her face. She then spoke with under her spell "maybe if pair people in groups into the buildings of best condition, that way we could share in greater deals of sustenance and habitat without causing little if any strain on what we have". It gained interest from a few in the crowd, at this point Logan asked her of her name, she answered bashfully "Anne, Anne7". Logan facing the crowd, did something that made us stunned, uncertain and as uncomfortable as the sandman himself. He announced to the crowd for a vote, a vote, just a sandman asking for anything was reason for shock. Since most had lived in shared living arrangements since birth, all had risen their hand up to the sky in favor. The only challenge was in finding people you could live with.
People began pairing up, some older greens and reds took more children to care for while others were looking for those they lost in the city. In the mayhem someone came up to us, he was a green dark hair and about my height. He was excitable shouting "hey!" as he approached us and "you need a place to stay?" when in front of us. Shaking our heads yes he took me by the collar as I took Dia by the hand and with that making our way through the crowd as a maze at light speed. In seconds we were in the open, he turned around and thanked us, with that he we were introduced to the rest of the group. There were 13 in all 4 reds, 5 other greens, 3 yellows and 1 white; he introduced himself as Peter 12 and introduced ourselves "I'm Alfred 4" "and Dia 29". The eldest was Arthur 21; he was the only one with a beard and the only male with shoulder length hair.
With formalities set aside Peter lead the way to our new quarters, to use that term would be an insult. Though it was in need of refurbishing, I could tell that one point this was a symbol of magnificence. As a child I read about places such as these, of how only one or two people would reside in these large quads and fill them with various objects most them rare and priceless, they went by funny names like mansion or palace. I read of how those who lived in these large quads were people of power, what seemed shocking to me was these people of power who in these grand buildings never shared what they had. If they had then possibly this world would be greatly different.
The quad had walls covered with paintings some of landscapes, other of people and some were purely of the imagination. There were fixtures of gold, silver and marble. Furniture of all types could be found as well most of them unusable though a few like the obelisk were untouched by time. They had cushions with innate floral patterns and ornaments of animals and winged people playing horns.
There were fruit trees on land in the back. Some of them had branches reaching into the windows, hell a few touched the walls. In the kitchen was a pantry loaded with food and bottles filled with various liquids. The building had three floors with a countless assortment of rooms designed for individual purposes yet as night fell all of us gathered into one grand room. It's walls were covered in paintings and a giant window from which light from the night sky would pour in giving the place a unique atmosphere. Here ate as well as had a chance to learn about one another. One person, a lady named Iris 8 had been an operator at the Hippodrome (the mazecar command center), her friend Alma 11 was a mazecar designer. It was interesting to learn how the whole system work inside and out, how a car Doc Blue was used to maintain the whole system or that mazecars were repaired or replaced monthly. They were breathtaking, making anything on every level interesting, it sounds awful, but looking at them you'd never guess they worked at the Hippodrome. Another, Adam 12 was a photographer, he had shown us a few of the pictures he had on him. Two were of artistic expression and the other of a model in black and white. I'd never been a real photo enthusiast but they were good. Laila 17 had been a cardiologist while Michel 22 was a mechanical engineer; he worked on the Asculaptor Mach III.
The conversation had then changed to what our reactions were to this new world followed by trying out the many different bottles found in the pantry. One of them was narrow at the top with a little plug at top and filled with a red liquid. There was a funny name on it's front for which none of us could pronounce, it's taste though was what mattered. Rael 5 the eldest yellow, had found glasses as well as a device to open it's top. Once opened, the bottle's liquid poured into glasses and passed out to each of us. When light from the night sky pass through the red filled glass, it's optical value was breathtaking, taste became a matter of opinion. Setting that aside, a bottle with orange liquid was then opened and served. It was sweet with a smooth texture being comforting to the lips. All of us found this concoction favorable. We tried out a few more bottles while conversing about anything and everything till the orb rose in the sky.
Four days became five, Dia had fallen asleep on my shoulder while empty glasses surrounded me in all directions. Gently and without waking her I placed on the floor, with that I gather the glasses and headed for the kitchen. I placed them in the sink, then I began to wonder if water would even come out of its faucet. It was silver with two handles on each side appearing in good condition, but looks are always deceiving. Some effort came when turning the knobs, but surprisingly water flowed out as though it was brand new. As the sink filled, a voice called out to me "like some help" I turned and replied "sure, I could use the company". With that she took a washcloth and well we cleaned glass. It then occurred to me to ask her "its Sylvia right?" "right" "Sylvia?" "9" "do we really need formalities Freddy" with that I raised my head slightly and replied "why not at all Sylly" I noticed a smirk upon her face, I believe this will be a good day.
She was stunning, hair was strawberry blonde short but wavy. Her skin was pale like that of porcelain, her fingers gliding in and around those glasses; I could've sworn they were dancing. The color of her eyes were purple something I'd never seen 'til today. Maybe this is why I'm unable to get my eyes off her.
The glasses were cleaned yet I couldn't get my eyes off of her, a splash of water to the face put an end to all that. "You've had your fun now get out! Breakfast has to be made" it was Arthur with a basket of peaches, along side him was Alma with a basket of barriers and other fruits. She found it quite the laugh compared to impatience.
So with that we got out and left the cooks to their work. We found our way to a balcony on the second floor, there was a chair I thought to it to her but she took to the ledge. All smiles she was, we began to talk as I took a seat. None of it important just passing the time, from below a voice shouted "hey ya guys cooking!" she answered "yeah!" "mind if I stop by and grab a bite?!" right then Alma shouted "breakfast is ready!" with that he came in and we came down. Once in the dinning room we saw that food was just set, in good fashion we served ourselves. It's sent filled the room, it was sweet, fragrant and good. Even better it tasted good Arthur was nice guy but he and Alma could cook. Our guest sat between us with enough food to feed both of us and ate it all in the span of an eye's blink. He then leaned back and gazed upon the ceiling, it was a simple but vibrant, for at first it appears curved though it was actually flat, the type for one must see to believe. As Arthur began yelling at the children for playing with their food and Peter was sleeping a noise came out of nowhere, a quick in our direction revealed the culprit. It had been from guest; his burp had amplified throughout the grand room and leaving him with a slight smirk. Breaking the silence, he introduced himself as Icaris 11 and that all his friends called him Slim. The nickname suited him since he was tall and as thin as a rail with not a care in the world nor ill will towards anyone. Pete began introducing himself and everyone at the table to him.
With breakfast over we gather at the balcony with coffee at hand and a view of the people below. You could see them cleaning the streets and even people in love with a few fights to top it off, fitting start to a lazy day. One that stood was ironically the air, it moved through your, clothes and all around yet there were no ducts or machines to move it, other had (rightfully so) more important things on their minds. Laila brought up the need for a hospital while Pete had plans for the place, Laila asked Slim what he did back in the city, with a wide smile he answered "nothing" leaving her with a flat expression on her face. I then asked Slim where he was staying, he pointed with his thumb to a small quarter next door, a few hours later he bided us good bye and had half a pot of coffee.
The orb had set and another day over, we went inside for dinner. The table had been lit by candlelight, this was different than from what I was use to but I wasn't gonna complain. After dinner I'd placed for myself on a long chair on the balcony, I took to it like a ton of bricks apparently screwing around all day can make you tired. As I was gazing at the vibrantly lit sky I thought "strange place this outside". I then fell asleep for the first time since we fled the Domes, life I now realized was different.
