Aw sweetheart thats so harsh. I'm sure your friend knows you're with him in spirit though, and that he's gone into rehab means he at least has the right mentality for recovery, perhaps his dad dying has made him realise he needed to sort himself out, and some good can come of a horrible tragic situation.
That's brilliant you want to do volunteer work, it'll be really rewarding, though it's always hard to see animals in distress. I'm sure you'll love it though.
In answer to your question, yes I do find it hard, amazingly so, even when I'm pissed, and hence, this is why I'm single! I think me and you need to find ourselves some lovely girl/boy to cheer us up! I've been single for way to long now, very bored.

all i can say is on the car journey down (in a boy racer pergeot 206 with big amps in back) my mate gets control of CD player in the que whilst people walkpast, swe crank up the bass ad volume, and blast the Shoop shoop song by Cher!
plus walking past security with 250 quids worth of spirits n 50 quid of lager, n all they checked was an ice cooler full of coke cans was to funny and lucky for ourown good.

Yeah I do an Egyptian form of Reiki called Reyad Sekhem. Apparently I'm quite good, my mum and aunt are really powerful healers. It always does amaze me when people have really good reactions to it, obviously not everyone believes it'll help, but for those who do, it's great. I've helped my friend stop a panic attack, and helped this bouncer guy who is an Ultimate Fighter heal his wrist injury he had for ages! I'm sure it might help you or at least ease the pain if not increase mobility. I mainly practice on my cat and myself, so it's good to help other poeple sometimes!
