Pretty good weekend so far. Friday was spent chatting with the flatmate's friend, then to do storytelling at the Waverly with the Burgh Blatherers. I had identified a brand of cheap scotch the bar sells so got some of that -- and weirdly, the bar seems to just make up the prices on the drinks, you can buy the same drink a day apart and it will be a totally different price. Anyway, at the Blatherers I sang some Purcell, which was nerve-wracking (I don't get nervous telling stories but singing in public seems to terrify me. I was shaking for like 30 minutes afterward.) Then everyone finished the stories really fast so we had to tell more. I told a Yiddish story about a hobo who tries to become a rebbe and kind of gets away with it through dumb luck. Afterwards I met some college boys at the bar and hung with them for a couple hours more.
Next day was the SG Scotland meet, so those of us attending started out at City Cafe, then we went ice skating which was more labor-intensive than I recalled it being, from when I was 9 years old (last time I'd been ice skating) then after some of that, it was drinking at a couple different pubs, and then to Yes Sushi, where we ate Japanese food. I discovered that a lot of the sushi has the same names as the American version but it's different substance (California Rolls have eggs in them here, according to the menu.) Also learned something interesting about tipping -- 5 is apparently an acceptable tip to leave on 110 bill.
So finally making progress with socializing, I've been starting to feel bad that I came out here to make friends and socialize and haven't been doing much of it.
