So I am in Reims now, where the kings of France used to be crowned. I kind of like it here -- it's a little expensive but not ghastly like Paris where you'd pay 7 for a waffle (here it's 3.) (And note a waffle here is food you buy from stands and eat with your hands, like churros or hot dogs in the US.)
It actually reminds me of Redondo Beach here, but with more medieval architecture. (Not a lot though, the place seems to have gotten all bombed out in WW1, so there's actually a lot of art deco stuff from the rebuild.) It's a big tourist place, with lots of shopping and eating available.
