Saw an ad for the Disney/Zemeckis "Christmas Carol" last night. The animation looks absolutely ghastly. It's like they modeled it on one of those cheap prints you find decorating a McDonalds, but added some 1996 level CGI.
it also showed how Hollywood just doesn't understand how to market movies anymore. It's "A Christmas Carol." Admittedly it's a well-known plot; but does that honestly mean loud crashing orchestral music and any clips that could be perceived as 'action adventure' is really the way to sell it?
Yeah, I was pretty disappointed, as I'd been kind of looking forward to the movie after hearing about it; they boasted of the animation techniques, the painting style they were trying to imitate. I think the tactic worked better (a little) for Polar Express, because the art style was more Deco and industrial looking. Christmas Carol is trying to imitate a softer kind of art and the jerky CGI movements just don't work at all.
