Today I ate Admiral's Pie, a loaf of French bread with (at various points in the day) butter, lemon curd and mustard butter, 2 cookies and a milk cake (this being a cheap brand of cream-filled snack cake.) I have started a new blog about cooking single portions, it's at: http://i-eat-alone.blogspot.co.uk/

I also auditioned for a play. I doubt I'll get a part.

And...

Today I tidied up the bedroom for the first time... it was getting pretty cluttered and the carpet was getting full of hair and face powder like it does when I'm around. The room has particularly got that unfortunate problem going -- which usually takes me about 6 months to resolve if I have a furniture budget, which I don't here, so it's not worth...

try blocking off the fireplace with some cardboard and seal it with tape....it will stop the heat from the radiator being sucked up the chimney....

Inre: clotheslines-- If you can afford it, get one of those plastic folding doo-dads that look like a dinner tray, but are composed of just bars, for hanging clothes on; and keep it near the heater when you're not in front of it yourself. Those work wonders in little rooms like that, and can be folded up and put away when not in use.

Peanut butter sandwich with chopped dates and bacon-flavored potato chips actually kind of works.

Done! And it provides me without causing any bloating, or random things. I love this recipe. It has been my source for things tasty for more than a month, so I know it works okay. There is also a cabbage soup that I use, but it lacks the protein. But still yummy if that is all that you have available.

I seem to be trying out a system of eating one 'good' meal a day and one cheap crap meal like a peanut butter sandwich. But that seems to not quite be enough food -- I actually am managing to get hungry. Dammit. Must buy crackers and things to snack on...

Life's not too bad all in all, since for now my savings are covering...

Yesterday I stayed in the house (especially since the heat was running for some reason) and just kind of nursed my feet and back.

Today I was going to be a productive member of society and at least go out and buy stuff, but I felt tired and stayed in a second time.

I will almost certainly go out tomorrow though because I have an...

When you say "baking soda" in an earlier post, do you mean baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) or baking powder (Sodium Bicarbonate plus Tartaric Acid)?

Sodium Bicarbonate can be purchased in large containers in stores such as Makro and Wilkinson. You could try Bookers Cash & Carry as well. Don't confuse it with Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) and especially dont confuse it with Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide... good for putting down sink drains in order to kill germs and clear out grime but very bad indeed for skin).

While I did kind of wreck my back carrying around a very heavy backpack, I think I found some better places to shop at (though they're more of a walk.) There's a weird place that only sells frozen food that looks like it's got stuff, and there is a big Tesco with cheap things (I got evaporated milk for 55p which is about half what...

Tesco's own brand (basics or essentials) I think they are called are really dood value, plus I think you could probably pick up their frozen "beef burgers" really really cheap at the mo (sorry couldn't resist that one)

I'm not 100% sure on this one but I believe what we call bicarbonate soda is what you call baking soda and if it is then you can get larger packs of bicarbonate soda almost everywhere.

Hope you're doing OK and look after your back

Hokey smoke--you're in Scotland now. I really have failed to dial in for a while. I will be following your adventures much more closely in future.

According to a survey which I'm unable to reference right now due to technical difficulty, graveyards are one of the most popular spots in Scotland for "nocturnal affairs". I know I did it when I was living there.

Today there was a weird tapping at my window... when I went to see what it was I found that it was SNOW.

Also, I ate a Milky Way bar. In the UK a Mars bar is what in the US we would expect when we buy a Milky Way. And meanwhile a Milky Way in the UK I don't think has an exact counterpart...

So I have a somewhat unfortunate combination of being both not a very hungry person in general, and being a total cheapskate. (Plus I get to be all afret about money even more than usual now that I have real bills to pay... it's the 11th and I've made about $23 this month, Christ...) Result was that somewhere around last Thursday I realized the reason...

I did a quick google search for "best before food outlets" the results seem to be for on line suppliers but I didn't look deep, these places sell food at reduced prices, there are food banks that give away food parcels but these seem to be for those that really need it and have to be referred .
If you can find food street markets they are all ways cheaper than supermarkets, but are not normally there on a daily basis, so you may have to plan your shop to match the market days. I wish you luck
twiggy:
Always check the reduced section in the supermarkets particularly in the evenings, you can get all kinds of stuff. The other thing thats good for veg is you can go to iceland or farm foods and buy a big bag of frozen veg too.

Success in doing a storytelling (pretty much) but... failure in really meeting any new folks, and also failure in getting to the second party I was supposed to be at tonight in a tunnel in Holyrood park (Google's directions for how to get places off my street are always a mess... anytime I want to get to Holyrood it just leads me into a walled...

Enjoying the beautiful "frozen sunshine" of Edinburgh. I wound up kind of accidentally going on the Free Tour today so got all soaked to the bone.I was reminded about the worst poet ever, McGonagall, though -- he's buried at Greyfriars. Sadly his poems aren't bad by current poetry standards....

I also got keys. Hurrah.

twotoast:
Good news on the keys at least you can come and go as you please now, free tours are good what kind was it?
