There's a new book out called Bags: A knitter's dozen. I haven't tired anything out of it but everything looks pretty easy.
I say go with felt bags because they're really really easy, you can make mistakes and its no big deal, and the shapes are easy. I LOVE feltes tote bags. I usually make my own, but I can figure out a simple pattern for you if you want.
And I can't say enough good things about Felted Knits. Awesome felted goodness for gifts!!!
