So the Tool show last Thursday was amazing, as I expected it would be. It was only the second Tool show that I had ever attended, so it was still really cool to see one of my favorite bands doing their thing. I most enjoyed the extremely positive, loving atmosphere of the entire concert. Maynard greeted us all with "Hey stoners", which we all were very amused by. The opening song was "Stinkfist", which I thought was pretty cool, and then they immediately jumped into "Jambi", one of the heavier tracks off of 10,000 Days. Anyway, those were solidly performed, and the energy levels were getting pretty high, right off the bat. But the whole "no moshing/no crowdsurfing/etc" signs up everywhere helped keep things under control. It was so cool to see people enjoying the show without beating the crap out of each other.
My favorite song of the night was the two-part song Wings for Marie, and 10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2). I wasn't sure that they'd play it, but they did. There was this really positive vibe from the entire concert hall. The song is a spiritual journey, ending in a little chit-chat with god about how Marie deserves her place in heaven. It's really powerful, and I loved it. My favorite lyrics from it being:
"Shake your fist at the gate, saying:
I've come home, now
fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father,
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
it's time now,
my time now,
give me my
give me my wings!"
The single coolest moment in the entire night, however, was when the band took their little break during the set. Instead of going backstage for a minute or two, like most bands, they instead sat right down in the middle of the stage. Danny lit his lighter and held it high into the air. Within seconds every single person in the entire hall that had a lighter had theirs lit and in the air as well. Those that didn't possess a lighter (such as myself) simple held their lit cell-phones in the air. And for those that did not have either, they simply raised their hands into the air. I just can't get over that. It was sooooo cool to see thousands of these little lights burning, each lovingly held by a fan. It filled me with an indiscribable happiness. Needless to say, it was really cool. I can't wait to see them again when they come back around.
On a random note, grad-school is the SUCK. Oh my god. This is really rewarding work, and I feel that I am actually on my way to doing something useful with my life, but man... there sure is a lot of work involved. Now that I know what to expect, I can allot my time appropriately, but holy crap, last week kicked my ass SO bad. I'm glad it's this week.
Peace out kids ; )
