it was another sleepless night for some reason, so when the alarm went off at 6:27, i could not face it. i called in to work saying i would be late, and reset the alarm for 8:30. i am so glad i did, because i slept better in that 1.5 hours than i did all night, and i had a lovely delicious dream about being in a neverending house with andrew bird. my crush on hin is happily refreshed.
part of the reason i did not get enough sleep is because just as i was about to turn the tv off and go to bed last night, i got sucked into this strange movie on the sundance channel. it was in french with subtitles, and was basically about this polyamorous relationship between a woman, her husband, and her lesbian lover. they were all living in the same house, and all three of them were aware of what was going on, and kind of consenting to it, for example each partner agreeing to spend three nights a week with the woman. however, the husband and lover resented each other quite a bit, and all three of them were insanely jealous of each other as well as any outside influences. crazy stuff ended up happening, like the lover making a deal with the husband to leave them alone in exchange for sex with him so she could get pregnant. and when the wife found out about it, she tracked down the lover and all three of them ended up living together again took care of the baby together and ended up seemingly living happy ever after.
while it appeared to work for these three characters, it lacked any depth of communication, and had absolutely NO trust at all. i could not really understand why the three people stayed together really, since it seemed like they were all pretty unhappy. then again, perhaps it is a cultural difference. the characters were screaming and swearing at each other one minute, and begging for forgiveness and declaring their undying love for each other the next minute. very volatile, very passionate. and i suppose in a way very honest as well. i mean, on one hand, there was a real lack of vulnerability, with the characters choosing to hide their shame and fear with anger, but on the other hand, they pulled no punches in expressing that anger, and stayed and fought for their love rather than running away.
jury is still out on my level of respect for these characters, but i am intrigued by the story the movie was telling. and i stayed up way to late to see how it ended.
