Languages and barriers thereof

A few days ago I received an e-mail that had an interesting question. The answer became quite a deep-scanning rambling, so I decided to post it here for your amusement:

> I'm wondering, how have you learned English so well?

Well, It's not so easy to say. Fact is, that I have studied English in school since the third grade, that...

Ehh. I must say that as a Swedish-speaking Finn, I dont reeeeally agree to all that about the pronounciation...wink Its a different way of speaking the language, is all. I love the Swedish accent, but I also love the mixture of languages, as long as people know how to speak each of them properly when needed...
testykitten:
nice commentary on language. i am struggling to learn spanish now. i have always wanted to- but since my boyfriend lives in mexico it has become even more of a goal. it just drives me crazy that i (and the majority of americans) only speak english. it just wasnt stressed in school- youre not given a second language course until high school. now that is changing, but the rest of us are still catching up.

If there was a word for the last weekend (Sana viikonvaihteeksi) It would have to be fragile.

We attended the funeral of my girlfriend's grandmother. Being in a traditional Greek Orthodox funeral was a new experience for me. I think it is appropriate to explain some terms and traditions to those, who are new to the concept. In Greek Orthodox church it is traditional to...

Itseasiassa reissaisin ihan mielellnikin, jos olisin yhtn varakkaampi...ehk saan perheelt jotain synkkrilahjaksi ensi viikolla, ken tiet. Mutta pitisi pst ainaskin Poriin katsomaan rakkaita ystvi ja Poriinhan tunnetusti mennn Tampereen kautta. smile

Ja Norjaankin pitisi pst. Mutta Norjaan meno maksaa kauhiasti. Hirmustus sentn. Miksi kaiken pit maksaa??

Things change, people change, times change.

I was given a reminder of my own mortality last friday, as my girlfriend's grandmother passed away. She had been bedbound in hospital for over a year, and badly demented, so I suppose it could be said to be a relief, at least for herself, to be rid of such unlife. And for all those, who remain, a time...

Mitenks nyttelijntyn laitos siell teill yliopistolla?

The snow has gone again. For the last two weeks it has been raining. Sleet or water. Last weekend some guys went sailing on lake Nsijrvi. Usually at this time of the year the lake is frozen solid enough to drive a car on without any problem, but now you can go sailing. The smaller lake near my home has over 10cm of water on...

"People tend to do quite weird things to pass the time, if they can't sleep."

I was, actually, in town on Saturday, but I spent all day long at the circus festival and then took the last train back home. But I will return, eventually, and then well have that cup of tea, eventually. Did you go to Schatten?

The year is starting slowly.

It all begun with a yearly inventory check at work, which took all Monday.. Then, fortunately I had some time off, that is, until Thurstday. I didn't remember I had to go to work on Friday until at the wee hours of Thursday night, on the way home from my parents.. I'm glad I didn't have to go to work...

So, Christmas came and went. Not much time to relax. Christmas Eve at Helsinki, Christmas Day and Boxing Day at Orivesi, then back to work.

I really don't care all that much about presents and decorations and stuff.. For me, the ideal Christmas would be a long quiet time to relax with friends and family, away from all the hurries and worries of the world....

We have to make the yearly inventory check at work today, and probably it'll take at least until 9 or 10 PM.. Tuesday should be free, though.

Feel free to SMS anyway, if you can find the time. smile

Well, the snow has come to stay, it seems.

It snowed in earnest for a night and a day, so now there is a thick snow cover everywhere. Some 20 cm or so.. And the air has gotten more cold, so it seems the snow will not melt in a hurry. It's not too cold, either. Just a pleasant -5 degrees centigrade.

I had a...

It's snowing at last.

It's been a straight week or two of sleet and wet, dark sludge on the ground in stead of snow. Now there is snow again, but it's still warm, so I doubt it will last. The snow is coming down in big, heavy rags that almost splash as they hit the ground. Even a bit too wet for snowballs...

Only a...

Last weekend I was reading a book called "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. I discovered something I had not known before, but now that I think about it, it seems quite obvious.

As you can see from my profile photo, I like horns. I've always liked them and especially wearing them. (of course there are not many occasions where you can wear horns...

Yeah, Chile is cheap but not for chileans, of course....As Argentina is cheap for us now...Some stuff...
haha, I'm sure you wouldn't have a crush for your sister if you had one, unless she was adopted and looked like Gwyneth Paltrow in the Royal Tennenbaums...But that's a whoooole different story....
You look cute in your horns. wink

Yet another boring day at work.. Nothing much happens here. Now I have to rush back home just in case somebody shows up to our medieval re-enactment groups biweekly meeting.. nobody usually does, since our group in this town is so small and people are busy, but I'll have to play the host anyway.

I still havent got my hands on a scanner to put...

Well, since the last entry I have uploaded some of my furry pics.. Just to give you an idea of my drawings. I'm still waiting to get my hands on a decent scanner to put up the most recent pic, which is, unconventionally for me, not furry but human, and drawn quite realistically compared to the cartoon style..

I'm decent with pencils, but realistic drawings...
