I had a sad realization today. Just now, actually. We've had a dog since it was a puppy that we got back in the early part of 2001. It'd been fine having him around up until my son was born in late 2002 when, as you'd imagine, he kind of took the backseat in the attention department. The change was not so immediate but he began acting more neurotic as small dogs are wont to do... Anyway, it got increasingly more out of control to the point where you never knew what was going to set him off into an unstoppable barking frenzy. Let's just say that his walks were less than enjoyable for us where it used to be fun seeing the joy he'd bring to others on the street...

So, the temporary solution we worked up - while we were planning on selling our apartment - was to adopt him out to a fellow coworker to see what it was like. It was peaceful. More peaceful than it had been in a long time. Part of the plan was that he was going to stay with our coworkers mother out of state for the month of august as well. This was before we decided to adopt him out officially. Well, he's gone, I think, for good now. It's weird but, there's this feeling of regret that I didn't have the chance to say goodbye. Bizarre. Really, really strange...

That's a sad story. I understand that hollow feeling of not having said goodbye. Two days before I moved away for grad school, my cat got sick and I took her to the vet. They kept her there and I had to move to start school. I never saw her again; she never recovered. She died two weeks later, at the vet's. I never really got to say goodbye to her; I really thought she would get well. Her death shook my world all the more b/c I had no closure. Although my sister was able to pick up her body from the vet and I came home to bury her in my parent's backyard...
Anyway, while I'm sure your dog misses you, it sounds like he's better off as an "only child" in his new home and is probably really happy! Can you go visit the dog at his new home, perhaps when your son is old enough to play with him?
