You see, some oysters create pearls. Others, in the deep parts of the ocean, grow big enough that they create mermaids. It's very technical and slightly magical, really. But basically, mermaids spring fully-formed out of mermaid-oysters and swim off to sing with the others. (Mermaid singing sounds a lot like dolphin or whale singing, not at all like human singing. It has to do with the harmonics of water.)
