O captain, my elusive captain! (yes, I am the person who stood on the table and saluted the teacher at the end of Dead Poet Society, lol) Oh were there any reality to that movie. Oh were there truly a hero to follow, even if only for a year. I think of being a teacher like that, but then I realize that if I continue to get fired for being to honest Im going to have a hard time supporting a family, which is something I greatly desire, and altho I pan to get married, I would never ask my wife to do everything. But the real captain wasn't that fictional teacher. The first time "o captain, my captain" was spoken was in reference to Lincoln. (Yeah I know, most people who have any care for intellect know this already, but I want to talk about Lincoln). Lincoln was a hero deserving of those words. There have been other historical figures too, Malcolm X, MLK Jr., Susan B Anthony. Where are the heros of our generation? Where are the activists? Liek the philosophers, artists, and intellects they seem to have gone missing. Either that or the monoplized media does a real good job of making them invisible. I remember being at this Alix Olsen concert a month or two ago. She asked us to name our female heros. My roommate who went with me pushed me to name someone, but I could not think of one modern woman who I really feel is worthy of the title "hero". I told him this and recieved some nasty looks from the "feminists" in front of me. I find it funny that anyone calling themselves a feminists would not be equally disappointed with the practical death of the feminist movement. In a time where sports are generally segregated by gender and women still earn 75 cents on the dollar for the same job as a man, what do u see on the news? What legislation is going thru to fight this? Where are the protests? If there are some, let me know so I can lend my voice, but really a movement without visibility is doomed anyway. After the concert I thought of 2 names I neglected as possibilities: Hilary Clinton and Nancy Pelosy. I don't think that as yet either of these women have accomplished anywhere near enough to be put along side Lincoln, but I see potential. But whats more distressing than the lack of female heros, is the lack of heros in general. I don't have any gay heros, altho at least there is a visible lgbt movement. I see no racial minority leaders or religious minority leaders (I would really like to see Wicca gain some visibility, but that requires a leader). The only hero I have is Eminem, who has been mis-labeled so much by the media that no one actually listens to his lyrics before passing judgement, which annoys the crap out of me. But he has a family anyway, I don't blame him for leaving the game since him and Kim got back together. At least I had his music to get my life back together. I swear his detox album saved my life. But besides him (and if anyone wants to challenge me on Eminem, please feel free, I can back up my belief in him with lyrics, watch the damn Mosh video!) I see no heros. No one trying to change the world. And I think to myself, maybe its me. Maybe I should become the leader, Im certainly opinionated enough. Lol. I wouldn't even know where to begin to gain support and visibility. Lincoln was the president, MLK a fairly notable clergy man. Im technically high priestess of my coven, but gathering pagans to one cause is like herding cats and my coven has like 5 peopel in it. So captian, my elusive captian... where are you?
