This style of entry suits me since I'm so freakin' obsessed with music.
The idea: Open your mp3 player (any kind), put it on shuffle, and then list the first 20 songs. Since just doing that is boring, write what each song means to you, if anything, and/or why you like it.
1) "Until the End of the World" - Apoptygma Berzerk
This song reminds me of my old roommate, dancing at Luna, dancing at Necto, driving into Detroit at night, old friends; it makes me really happy, so I play it whenever I need a pick-me-up.
2) "The Twist" - Chubby Checker
I grew up listening to oldies, and this has always been a favorite. Additionally, it makes me smile because my father and I always dance to it at weddings. We have pictures of him squatting way down and dancing it with me when I was a little girl. (Picture a 6'4" man dancing with his three-year old daughter. Awww). He held my hands to show me how to do it. As I got older, it became tradition to dance it with him any time we heard it at a wedding. On top of that, I have a home movie of him teaching Busia (his mother) how to twist at a basement party in 1963 when he was on leave from the army.
In summary, this song reminds me of my dad, who is absolutely wonderful.
3) "Something Wicked This Way Comes" - Barry Adamson
Sultry, sexy, and reminiscent of the 1960s (the mod era, specifically). Something about this makes me think of martini parties, egg-shaped chairs, women in go-go dresses, sun porches, and shag carpeting.
4) "So Far Away" - Dire Straits
Very not-as-80s-rock as you'd think. It's a beautiful song, and it's a must for any long distance relationship "I miss you" CD mix. It's really pretty, and it makes me happy when I'm missing someone.
5) "Forest Hymn" - Deep Forest
This album will always, always, ALWAYS remind me of nights in my freshman dorm room at NMU. My roommate and I put it on almost every night during the last semester. More often than not, we'd talk all the way through and then fall asleep as the last song played. I can't listen to this album without getting strong nostalgia for those days in the U.P.
6) "Amulet" - Natacha Atlas
Belly dancing music. God, I miss it.
7) "Hey Mambo" - Rosemary Clooney
Dating bluvelvet (he gave the song to me) and real Italian restaurants. It's also a lot of fun to sing.
8) "Halo" - The Cure
One of my Top 5 favorite love songs. Period. It's beautiful and sounds like I could have written it (the language used to express his love is very "me")
9) "No Woman No Cry" - Bob Marley
It does not remind me of smoking pot. It reminds me of one of my best friends, Chris. We went to NMU together, and I spent many a night relaxing in his dorm room listening to this song. We lost touch for years, but we've been back in contact the past couple of years. I listen to this song whenever I want to remember how young and carefree I was during those relaxing days in his dorm room. It makes me forget a lot of my stress.
10) "Take Five" - Dave Brubeck Quartet
A co-worker introduced me to this one night after work back in 2000. I love jazz, and this song has the "feel" I love. It also reminds me of Chicago during a rainstorm.
11) "Red Rain" - Peter Gabriel
I always think of my best friend, Kenn, when I hear this song. He showed me that Album Peter Gabriel is much different from Radio Peter Gabriel. This is off the first album he copied for me, and it's the first track, so it got played the most often. It's a damn good song, to boot.
12) "Angel (Catharsis of Sufferance") - Darling Violetta
The full version of the theme song from "Angel". 1) 'Cause I'm a dork. 2) 'Cause it's a damn good song. 3) 'Cause I love the cello, and this features one.
13) "I Wear Your Ring" - Cocteau Twins
Shimmery, pretty, romantic, beautiful, perfect. I love the Cocteau Twins.
14) "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver" - Primus
It's a fun song. I love singing along while I'm driving. The music is fabulous.
15) "Under the Milky Way" - The Church
This has been a favorite since high school...about 1992. I have yet to slow dance to it with someone. It's one of the most beautiful songs in my collection, and I've been in love with it for many years.
16) "Clarinet Polka" - Frankie Yankovic
Ha. Ode to my family, I guess. We always do at least 3-4 polkas at weddings. Polka music makes me happy (in small quantities), so I have a few songs in my music folder.
17) "Lucille" - Little Richard
I love to listen to this song (and other oldies) while baking on a Sunday afternoon. Yes, I scream it right along with him.
18) "Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak
I've had this song in one form or another since it was released fifteen years ago, and I have yet to get tired of it. It's beautiful and perfect in so many ways.
19) "Don't Go" - Wumpscut
Driving through the city at night, whether it be Detroit or Chicago -- this song is perfect for it. It's dark and persistent.
20) "Absolutely Fabulous (Single)" - Pet Shop Boys - Queer as Folk Soundtrack
This song makes me SO happy. I have it on every mix CD I've made for the car, and it's in my Top 20 Most Played in iTunes and #3 on my iPod.

No, despite my best efforts I am still girl-less. I have a couple promising prospects, but I think it'll come down to not whether I dig them, but if it's reciprocated.
