Joyce Kilmer is gorgeous, and has handy-dandy free camping nearby. It is, however, in the middle of nowhere - about 2.5 hours southwest of asheville. But, it has easy to difficult trails, it's right next to the Cherohala skyway (amazingly beautiful driving, or mountain biking if you're hardcore, that goes more than a mile up in altitude), and, if you fish, it has excellent trout strams and lake Santeetlah. Anyway, definitely worth your time.
