There go my holiday plans.

I've wanted to visit Krakow for years.

But these arseholes need to understand that their decisions have economic effects.

_kungfoo_:
Thanks! I'm free and I've got my middle finger ready if they even try.

Legally speaking, they can't do anything. When people enlist, there's a cause about being in the inactive reserve for 8 years, even when people think they think they're only signing up for 4. I was in for 9 years, so that's void. Also, I'm technically a disabled veteran (I developed a mild asthmatic condition about three years ago, bah); the military's own regulations prevent re-activating a disabled veteran.

My real concern is that I find myself in a "I need a job" position. Or, at worse, unemployed. And I'd hate to think that I could have gotten *some* job, but was too snobby.

At the same time: these just aren't jobs right? Moving from one assistant prof position to another is *hard.* And uprooting your life to move to some school that you hatehatehate would kind of kill you I think. Ugh.

It's one day at a time right now. Like my friend said: Just because you apply, doesn't mean you get the interview. Just because you get the interview, doesn't mean you get the offer, Just because you have an offer, doesn't mean you need to take it.

I hate being a tool who applies with not much of an interest in going there. BUT, at the same time, I don't really know the place unless I get a chance to go there, meet the people, see the place..... it's a bind. I'm still rolling it all over in my head.
signalnoise:
Your response wasn't wordy at all (anyway, I left a big old huge comment to you first...).

But to respond: yeah, I think everything you said is right. I've basically decided I'm going to apply even to the "iffy" jobs and see what happens. But if the choice is between "shitty job" and bumming around here for another year, sort of broke? I'll *seriously* consider the latter. Like you said, moving to some crappy town, for some creepy school and jackass students? That will fuck you up.

At the end of the day, my job right *now* is getting job interviews, and turning those into offers. What do after that is a concern for another day. One step at a time and that jazz.

Would it be too cynical if I said "smothering"?

I can't imagine this number of deaths in either American or British custody without serious questions being asked. I would very much like to see a statistical breakdown of these deaths by nationality and immigration status. But as I say, perhaps I am too cynical.

hey... just wanted to say good bye before my account runs out (in about 30 minutes or so). You are an interesting person, an intelligent person, I DO think you'll do well in life. We have hashed out a few things on the boards, aaaaand typically don't agree, but I will add that I have learned something from our exchanges. Be well and good luck with all that you are about to take on! wink
redheadedleague:
Frightening and surprising.

Whoa.

Watch it. Srsly.

(Credit: Hunkpapa.)

that pretty much encapsulates my unease about recorded music. If I'd heard that on the radio, or on CD, would I have cared? I don't know.

I'm not hearing that wildswan is any better. I hope she is. Go encourage her to get well, again. Thank you.

The first time I heard this guy it was just an mp3, and he still caught my interest in the same kind of way this video does.

Not nearly to the same extent, however.
kpan:
He's been around a while but seems to have become a bit of a festival darling in the last two years...Man can play the blues mind you.

SockPuppet is tired and drunk. But since you're here, have a look at this:

and remember this is the official video. If you can't bear the music, turn it down; and watch it anyway.

Because - funny thing - I don't think I have ever, once, in my entire life, seen a promo video with the singer at the back. Worth a thought.

it was cool, wasn't it? i hope she does more like it.
coyotemike:
Actually, I don't. That's on my list of books I haven't gotten to. My bad.

Not a big deal, its far more entertaining than the boards normally are. The woman is batshit insane, but it isn't my patience that keeps me coming back to the well. Its the same impulse that makes you slow down at a bad car crash.
coyotemike:
It has started to catch up to her.

I will be editing my friends list some time soon.
If I get it wrong, please explain wink

That was really an amazing treat!
wildswan:
Nice! That twang is delightful.

Alas, I'm no better; fortunately, I'm no worse.

Oh, and I've passed that vid along to the delight of a number of other people.

Okay; it's clear to anyone who keeps their ears open that we need to do some pretty radical restructuring of our economies and the way we do stuff. The cost of fuel is going to trend steadily upwards (and with it the cost of food); climate change is going to be an increasing influence on everything we do.

wildswan:
Sadly, I'm not better. I was really hoping to be. Thank you for asking about me.
hunkpapa:
that's true, I should try and remember that more often (it would be useful to do so sometimes).

after you referring to patterns that come up everywhere the other day, I decided to have another crack at reading this. the first time I tried it, I got a bit bogged down and stopped reading, though I was far enough into it that I couldn't just pick up where I left off. so I'm back at the start - here's hoping I get a bit further this time!

The Chinese are catching on.
And about time. Now, where's that Kyoto thingy gone?

This, on the other hand, is - well, understandable. But it's not a good move.

i hadn't thought of it like that, but I just watched it again, and yes, you're right.
hunkpapa:
I don't know if I've ever read much on fractals, to be honest (though I have just been looking through this; interesting stuff). I did have a fairly lurid poster of the mandlebrot set on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager, though smile

Holy crap.

On the American side ... a U-2 pilot ... blundered over the Soviet Union at the height of the crisis on 27 October after being sent on a mission to the North Pole to monitor Soviet nuclear tests.

[T]he Russians ... scramble[d] half a dozen Mig fighters in response. The [US] Air Force failed to inform the president of what had happened until...

By the way I enjoyed The Post-Rapture Post. I'm sending you a letter, think you need savin' boy. wink
hunkpapa:
in the past, I've only really turned over to 4 or the World Service if there's been some sports commentary on 5 that doesn't sit well with me at 1am or thereabouts. that's actually pretty rare; generally Up All Night hits the spot. interesting, varied, informative, quality presenters... plenty of serious stories, without the whole thing being too serious. top quality US election coverage too, or so I found the past couple of elections.

and I know what you mean. to me, Radio 1 is nothing since John Peel died. I haven't listened to it (voluntarily) since. he was so much more than just another voice on the radio, wasn't he?

OK, that was boring. True, but boring.

I larfed.

The ladies are lovely aren't they?

I had never heard of, or seen, a theremin before. How is this possible??? surreal
