DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Well, there is no word from Holden's supervisor yet. Perhaps he'll never find out. Perhaps he'll find out later (more likely).

Holden found out some more bad news today. The plasma center has moved to Mt. Pleasant, MI. Damn those CMU Chips! That's another $160/mo. of lost income. frown

Holden's mother has recommended that he pursue local school districts to officiate, but Holden...

Usually an entertaining conversation is talking about world events, the news, the election, politics, science, music, jazz especially, interesting things that happen at school/work.

Things like that.

Usually with my other friends it is who is sleeping with who, who got 'busted,' who is a jerk, what classes 'suck ass,' etc, etc.

And the dean closed all of the party houses at our school, as well as increasing penalties of having/drinking alcohol to extreme levels, unlike last year. Parties used to be fun. Now they just a liability that I am not sure i want to take the risk of. His new policies pretty much forces people to drink and drive (as there is a state school <10 minutes away), and drunk driving is something I never want to be even remotely near. So it seems as though I will be attending extremely few parties this year.

And to make it much much worse, thats how I usually meet people, because I am pretty terrified of social situations.

Shucks.

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .really screwed up today. It was an innocent day enough. He worked on his computer for a while, watching the Lions beat the Bears for their first away win in four years. He took his daily four-mile exercise walk, giving the local kids some candy upon its conclusion.

It was about 7pm. Holden was watching the ESPN football game. He...

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .wrote a letter to his mother today:

Querida Cybermadre,

I'm sorry that I didn't reply sooner, but my college life was in limbo temporarily because of some feedback I received about my incompletes. I should have followed up on them before the semester started. Apparently, EMU didn't change the incomplete rule after all and they stay as incompletes even after...

man, considering how regimented and restricted classes at english universities are, it always astounds me to hear of the open-book policy of american universities. the freedom you have to choose courses is amazing; i think i was born in the wrong country blackeyed

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .prepared for his first college classes in over two years today by purchasing a couple of school notebooks, pens, mechanical pencils and highlighters. He spent a whopping $11, hoping that he'll wake up in time tomorrow for his 9:00am class. It's Introduction to Geography from 9-11:40am and Introduction to Literature from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Yes, Holden knows the classes overlap...

Thanks for the support. I really appreciate it. kiss

Hubby has been out of work since November. He started doing tech support in California for a company that was bought out by Earthlink in Dec. 2000. He got a generous severance package and an offer to work at one of Earthlink's call centers- but we didn't want to live any of those places- and we got more $ without taking one of the jobs.

So we moved back here and he got a job right away with the big local tech support co. Earthlink (arghhh, again!) bought their dial-up customers last year, hence the layoffs. He was promised a minimum bonus, after the dust settled, with higher amounts determined by the retention rate of customers but it never materialized, and was so small to begin with, it wasn't worth pursuing with legal tactics.

It's just frustrating, because in the tech field, where we are, companies are looking for employees who can write code, administer a database, and are certified in network admin. and hardware and they are only offering $8-$9/ per hour. He applied at the local drive-thru coffee place yesterday- he can make that much there, and it will be fun. It seems crazy but it's just the sign o' the times, and I know it will get better. His job search has definitely made me wise up about my job, and how lucky I am to have it.

On the upside, there are virtually no childcare costs- that's part of why when his unemployment ran out in June, we didn't think it was crucial for him to start working right away- that would have meant upwards of $800/month childcare during the Summer. Also, it is so awesome that my son got to bond with his dad, and I knew he was taken care of really well while I was working.

Although, I did put my son in a few of the afternoon summer camps where I work (a hands-on science museum). They were free, thankfully. He also did a week-long youth theatre program which was so awesome.

All in all, I think this will seem like a tiny bump in the road when we've been married for 40 years. (Even though it sure feels fucking monumental right now).

Again, thanks for the support. I am so jealous that you are back at school. Are you post-grad or working on your bachelor's?

P.S. I can't believe I missed your birthday! I was up in the woods camping on Saturday, but that's no excuse, really! I hope you had a fun one.

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .was sad today, because no matter how he cuts it, he can't find enough classes to create a full course load for the current semester. He was so sad that he had to take a nap, screwing up his sleep cycle once again, despite being "on call" for work, hoping that his cell phone ringer would wake him up. (Luckily,...

I just got a strange look from the clerk...it's going too slow. Almost everyday is a different schedule and a lot of hurry-up and wait. Mostly organizing meeting and events. We were working with some grass-roots groups to do fundrasing.

Problem is I need more cash...I got a rent increase because I'm going month to month. So I'm going to 2 interviews today for a much bigger salary and benefits. It was fun and is a good reference but I got bills and wisdom teeth. mad

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .is going to try to crash a few afternoon classes tomorrow: MATH 325, Differential Equations and MATH 370, Probability and Statistics I, since his incomplete classes can't be converted to letter grades anymore. They shall remain "I" for all eternity. Could it be, perhaps, because they are over three years old? confused

Differential Equations and Probability and Statistics I are not...

bingo! ARRR!!!

Rest of comment continues....

I remember reading your story about the Yale librarian--- good story. in some ways i'd rather do the opposite: start as a librarian, quit the job and go study the secrets of indigenous people wink I seriously considered doing a Masters conversion degree in Social Anthropology, but as interesting as that would be, I'm not sure I have the devoted passion for anthropology to truly go and do something like that. Politically though, my interest in anarchism makes social anthropology a more relevant discipline than actual Politics, but the little niche I've found means I can dip in to such a fascinating subject from the comfort of my own armchair.

Your CV is outstanding eeek I can barely tackle the maths I did at high school. meh!

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .finally sent those letters to his professors. Now he anxiously awaits positive responses so that he may begin work on his classes.

The Prisoner of Azkaban was a nice film--rather dark--but very entertaining. The dark scenes were good for the Dementors and Lupin's Werewolf transformations, but I felt that they were unnecessary overall. I particularly liked Lupin's portrayal in the...

DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .blew his Birthday by trying to make satellite TV and DSL Internet work in more that one room in his new home. Holden's solution? DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .made some progress in registering for classes. He made a list of classes that he needs as well as a list of contact information for his professors. Since his classes this term will probably be taken independent study, he has until the end of the month to register; however, he needs to get cracking because the point of registering for...
