My grandmother is Karelian (though Finnish Karelian, not from Russia) so thats the one and only real connection I have to any other Uralic folks...its a bit different with the Finns (and the Estonians, too, and Hungarians) mostly because well, we do have our own countries, are not under the supprsession of Russia (as is sadly the case with all the small ethnic groups spread all over Siberia, and the nearly extinct Smi people in Lappland) and dont have to struggle to keep our own language. Ive met up with people from Mari El, on a folk music festival, but thats about it, sadly.
