Been pondering considerably of late as to what I ought to do with the rest of my life. Answers seem to be few and far between, but I am increasingly more sure that I can't force myself to feel a burning passion for something about which I'm not inherently passionate. That seems likely to rule out most of my current avocations as a primary focus, although I will definitely keep pursuing them with enthusiasm. Basically, in terms of things that reside permanently and deeply in my heart, the list consists only of auto racing and rock & roll.
I can still try to get back into racing, but with my dad no longer physically able to help much and no other reliable help in sight, my prospects vis-a-vis racing are quite uncertain. It's not like I ever attempted to run for a points championship though, even in my best years, and I think it's gotten to the point where I miss it more than I worry about having to start all over again.. Couldn't hurt to get a relatively inexpensive IMCA-type modified to play with...
As far as rock & roll goes, I was never even in it. Trying to develop a musical talent at this late date seems fairly ridiculous, but given that I've accepted the unlikelihood that I'll develop any new passions, I think I may at least make some efforts in that direction. I already know I don't appear to have any talent for guitar or bass, but at a minimum that leaves drums, saxophone and vocals yet to be explored. Can't hurt to try, especially so long as nobody else has to listen to the racket!
It's weird, but just writing this stuff makes me feel better. Sometimes we try to force ourselves to be too damn practical. For better or worse these are the things I love - no reason not to try to find a place in my life for them...

I don't think it matters how old you are when you take up an instrument or you start to play rock n roll. If you don't feel like you have any natural talent, it could really help to take some lessons from someone who specializes in R n R-- sometimes it takes a "gift" to write the stuff that makes you a rockstar, but it only takes playing with formulas and using a little creativity to write some sweet riffs. half the time I go out to see local rock n roll bands at bars, theyre all "grown ups" ... If you've the got rhythm, give it a shot! Cheers!
