To answer your question: Does one (this case myself) put respect and common courtesy in the same category? NO. Absolutely not, respect is earned and common courtesy is exactly what is says, it is common. I give everyone common courtesy, sure it is a simple form of respecting my fellow humans but I respect people on the the basis of action. I was raised that way, I don't respect police because they have a badge, I will respect an officer who is trying to actually protect people. To the same degree I will give all police courtesy because they are people with a shit job dealing with assholes like me.
