I'm pretty sure mono isnt in fire extinguishers. But I'd bet whatever it is is not stuff that belongs in lungs. Maybe it made your lungs more vulnerable to getting sick from some bug going around.
Your academic crisis sounds sort of like how I am when something is bugging me. Is something bugging you?
