Blast from the Old Skool Past

Tags: atari 2600

Tired of all the new games with their pesky “Next Generation Graphics” or “Crystal Clear Sound” all brought to you in an eerily too realistic fashion via your HDTV? Well fear no more, Luddite! You can now buy a brand new game for your dusty and obsessively maintained Atari 2600.

"You find yourself located on a plain field and can barely see a small pyramid on the horizon. The sun is burning and before long the first spear is thrown by one of the spear-throwers along the sides of your path. "

Awesome! I’ve always wanted to play a game where my sole purpose was to run across the hot sand until I lost the will to live!

"You should try not to collide with the spears, because otherwise a screen like this will inform you that your quest is over. Your final score is shown until you use the fire-button to return to the game's introduction sequence."

Spears in the head are bad. Got it. What about eating this highly venomous 8-bit scorpion laying on the ground? Or is that a PS2? I can’t tell. But I’m glad I’m playing this because I’m a "retro gamer" and we’re the "coolest" ever! Yeah!

The game is currently priced at 55 Euros which translated into American dollars is (pretends to do math) a lot of fucking money for a game where you run endlessly across the sand and get struck in the head with spears. However, I will say that I admire this man for going all out and putting it all together in a adorable little package. Complete with instruction manual, case, cartridge, and CD.

Hehe... I still have my original 2600. Haven't hooked it up in years but now I'm itching to play a little Pitfall smile

Hah, I like that there's a list of everyone who's bought a copy. So that we can moc^H^H^H praise their studliness. And you'd think they'd be able to think of a better name for the game than "A VCS Challenge".

I do commend them for doing work for an outdated console, and taking the time to make a full package...but, yeah, Atari's below my threshold. Just *too* primitive.

New games (homebrews) come out for the Atari 2600 all the time. Check out atariage.com. I don't actually own any of them but I do have 3 working systems and about 160 (old) games.

I had to look up and actually check that the 2600 was an 8 bit machine, haha.
